Ok, so I have a '92 GS500e. Bought it back in January. When I first got it, the previous owner had the bike sitting all winter and it basically needed carbs cleaned, and a general tune up. I took it to the local shop and had them work on it. It took them nearly a month to get the bike back to me...I guess they're really busy this time of the year.

Anyways, I got it back, everything was good...it would start up without any problems except for one issue. After the bike would warm up and after riding for a little while; I would stop at a red light and the RPMs would start rising by itself. Up to about 6K. I didnt pay too much attention to it, I was just glad to have it back and I would put it in first, and let the clutch slip a little to keep the RPMs down.

So flash forward a couple of weeks, I'm riding home, nothing too crazy. I'm in third and give it about 3/4 throttle (which is actually more than I usually do, I'm still new to riding) and all of a sudden the bike kind of jerks and I hear like two pops out of the exhaust. After that I ride for about a mile and when I try to give it any throttle it seems very hesitant...just not very responsive. I'm trying to go up a small hill, I give it a bit of throttle and the RPMs just drop and the bike dies. It won't start again. I'm about a mile away from home so I start walking it...I try to start it after a little while and it fires up but once again very hesitant and eventually dies after a little while. This happens about 2 more times until I get home.

The next morning I try to start it up, it has trouble starting, I have the choke down and on about the 7-8th try, it starts up, RPMs rise up to about 4K. I try to let it warm up a bit...I slightly pull on the throttle and the RPMs drop. I pull on it a bit more and the bike dies. After that, I haven't been able to start up the bike, nor have I really tried all that hard.

I just need advice on what to do and what the problem might be. I could call up the motorcycle shop and try to give them some beef, but I really don't wanna go through that again...I don't wanna risk being bikeless for another month. I'm fairly well incined mechanically...I used to do a lot of work on my volkswagen and repaired and installed most of my performance mods. So anything I can do myself, would be better.

Sorry for the long story, but I figure the more throrough I am, the better response I can get. Thanks in advance.

Quick Update:

Just gave the bike a try...started up, I let it warm up and throttle response seemed good. Everything actually seemed normal other than the high idle. Turned it off. Fired it up again and got a POP sound out of the exhaust, but throttle was fine again. Tried it again an hour later and it started up fine and everything seems ok again other than the high idle.

Try these ideas for some fixes on the high idle:

Note that setting the idle must be done when the bike is fully warmed. This usually means idling without choke, followed by a 10 min - 15 min ride. If the idle climbs at any point during the ride, pull over and adjust the idle at the side of the road.

Unfortunately, hard starting and backfiring suggests some other problem than just an incorrectly set idle position. Perhaps you will find an air leak somewhere (again, see the thread I linked to).

backfiring from the exhaust on deceleration happens cause the mix is lean.

If its really bad, I would rejet. That also solved my high idle problem. I had it the same as you. once warm when I got into neutral at a stop light rpm's would rise to about 6k. setting the idle while warm didn't really help me. I had to rejet then set the idle while warmed up.

I wouldn't ignore the high idle. the bike is supposed to idle at 1200 rpms. 6k idle will cause premature wear and tear and cause chronic high engine temp. mine already runs hot when at a stop... air cooled machine and all.

hmm thanks...just went for a ride. experience bogging and eventually the bike would die out.

I noticed its easier to start up the bike when its in the fuel switch is in the PRI position...its also easier to ride like that....even though the gas tank is at least 1/2-3/4 full. After a short ride, I turned it off, started it up again and it backfired.

This indicates a bad vacuum operated petcock. The problem is that the vacuum operation fails and starves the bike of fuel, causing it to act like it's running out of fuel.Try these for a solution.

Converting the stock petcock to nonvacuum operation.I do this mod.PM me for details.
