It looks right to me. You might ask the seller which bike this was originally used for? As far as I know, there are two common shim tool designs: 1) Honda, 2) Suzuki/Yamaha

HONDA

SUZUKI/YAMAHA

I also think within Suzuki there are different shim removal tools because of the different bucket sizes? Just make sure, not 100% positive though.

Thanks Berto.  The title says Suzuki/Yamaha so I would assume thats it.

I will try to remember to look at mine tonight to see what model number it is. I have one from Motion Pro and it does look like the Suzuki/Yamaha picture.
Common sense in not very common.

okay guys thanks for the pointers. I am planning on getting one myself. Any there any other lower prices out there? I see the Motion Pro Valve Shim Tool for 19 bucks in the pit posse site.

ATLRIDER

Well I can say that it works.  As far as quality, I'm not so sure.  It has sort of a rough texture where I thought it would be a smooth piece of steel.  Maybe Motion Pro makes a better one.  I'd take a closeup pic of it for ya but it wedged in btwn an cam and lifter right now ;)

Probably just a sandcast part.  I ordered one just now.  Thanks!

The one my dad gave me had a bit of a rough finish, and it was a bit tough to use compared to the one I had 25 years ago. I took a file to the end, smoothing out the surface and making it depress the bucket more gradually. That and a touch of wheel bearing grease made it work much easier.

The tool that Pit Posse sells is the Motion Pro Tool.

Wow ... there is a suzuki+yamaha tool ??? OK I have used the suzi tool on my brothers FJ600 ... however it was far from ideal. The yama tool has 2 bolt holes, and it uses the valve cover threaded holes to get pushed in and depress the shim.
The suzi tool from motion pro, the one specific to the GS works like a charm BTW, so it makes sense to buy that one and not the wrong one ...  :icon_mrgreen:

The tool stamped "Suzuki" is described on the Motion Pro website as being for both Suzuki & Yamaha. :dunno_white: http://www.motionpro.com/motorcycle/tools/view/valve_shim_tools/

Here's what they say:

  • For adjusting valve clearance on twin-cam models
  • Holds valve spring bucket down so adjusting shims can be removed
  • Manufactured from hardened alloy steel
  • Same design as the OEM tool
  • Replaces Suzuki tool 09916-64510 and Yamaha tool YM-04125
  • Fits all Suzuki 4-stroke models with shim-type valve tappets
  • Fits all Yamaha XJ600 Seca II models

According to the Suzuki shop manual, this Motion Pro tool is the same as the OEM tool specific to the GS.

The Buddha

Aaaah ... seca (xj600 is the seca 2) OK ...
The seca has a completely different head and very different valve cover bolts really.
Cool.

Ugh - got it today and it does not work!  Its not tall enough or something - when I put it in it rotates down freely and never grabs the bucket to push down.  I can get it to depress when its sitting on the shim, but then the shim is trapped

DGyver could you check and see if the model number you have is the same, and it does work?

Ive got the A01-29 and cant get it to depress - not tall enough

OK nevermind that, I was trying to depress on the edge of the tool and not on A below:

But no matter how hard I try - it seems that A overlaps the shim and wont allow it to come out.  Any ideas?  Just keep trying?
