Head differences by year?

Hi, I had some rotten luck and bought a GS500 that needs a replacement head. The last owner overtightened the cam caps and cracked two of them. I'm looking at a 2007 GS500E head on ebay, I have a 2001. I've heard that the heads were different on the GS500F, did they even make an E after 2003? Is there any chance it'll work on my motor?

Thanks!

only difference is if it came from an oil cooled model I think otherwise should be the same :thumb:

The F models have an electric tach and no longer use cable drive from the head.  Oil cooler doesn't connect to head.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.

The hole for the drive gear was still in the head in 04 but it was plugged. I believe the hole was removed in 05.

Hmm... I have  a 2005 head on the line, he says the casting for the mechanical drive is still there. I wonder how hard it'd be to drill out / install the worm gear from my old bike? If those tolerances were off it could just permanently hemorrhage oil from that port... Has anyone actually pulled off transplanting a post 2005 F head to pre 2002 E motor?

It is possible with the proper equipment... an end mill. I would not attempt boring the hole with a drill dress.

Another option is to switch to an electric tach with the 05 head. The wiring is not difficult.
