New Orleans cop suspended within the last 15 minutes of his 35 year career on the last day of the job. Unbelievable.

It's blatant racism. If the cop would've been black witha white supervisor, Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have been given 24 hour news coverage and the God Damned (may God forgive me for typing it) National Guard would have shown up with affixed bayonets.
New Orleans is as f%&ked up as D.C. any day of the week. Their corruption esp. in the leadership of all forms of local government is well known. The homicide rate is as high as it gets. I was just pointing out how ridiculous it was to get pumped in the keister after 35 years and on the last day of your job as Blue Twin so aptly put. Thanks for your input Frank.

I'm not sure I caught the blatant racism part.  :dunno_white:

It seems - based solely on the linked story - that the cop was, at most, making a political statement against the brass. Probably something related to Hurricane Katrina since that's when their uniforms changed. There'd have to be a whole lot more behind the story to justify a suspension on his last day though. Based on my years and years of experience watching Law & Order  , I would guess that they did this to him knowing it wouldn't affect his benefits but may discourage any other not-retiring-today officers from doing the same (for fear of being suspended/investigated now that a precedent's been set).

And I'm not sure it's fair to compare him wearing an older issue police uniform to showing up in PJs with a teddy bear.  :icon_rolleyes:

Well, yes it is fair.  Either way, you would be out of uniform.  If you've never served in the military/police then you really wouldn't know.  Unless you have a really anal boss and you have to wear uniforms to work.  In the military, you are expected to be dressed as everyone else is dressed.  Everyone should match.  Your cover better be correctly positioned on your head and your gag line damn well better be straight.  But, like Frankie said, they would just laugh if you wore the wrong uniform on the last day.  He was showing respect to the officers who died wearing that uniform in the best way he knew I guess.  It takes a really huge @$$hole to do something like this.  It takes someone with a chip on his shoulder the size of Texas to make this mans last day of work so shitty....  I think there's more to the story as well.  This guy must've really pissed off the chief at some point for him to do this.

As far as the racism......  The black community plays the racism card all the time.  Even when there's no reason.  It works to their advantage to play the card.  See the following link.  http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2008/07/dallas-county-meeting-turns-ra.html

It's high time white folks started standing up to this bullshit.  If we don't then we're gonna be made to feel so f%$king guilty that we'll all move back to england or wherever our f%$king ancestors are from.  I'll play the race card anytime I get a chance.  Show them how it feels.  If it were a black officer and a white chief whaddya think would've happened?  Exactly what Revere said.  Every f%$king news outlet would be showing non-stop coverage of the poor black man and how he was treated after serving so many years.  I can see the headlines now:  "Racism in the Chocolate City".........  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chocolate_City_speech

And no, I'm no racist.  Never have been, never will be.  But enough is enough.  It's getting old........

Hmmm, if color of skin is the first thing you think of its not racism? And if you play the race card then that would make you no better than the people/race you are criticizing.
And since we are all waving our service record around, I was in for 18 years and wished I could still be in because civilians suck. Remember if you do something stupid(which he did) you have to be held accountable for your decisions/actions. If he notified his CO he would probably be pulling a pension today, to indanger your 35 years for something stupid, is stupid.

to suspend a 35 year vet on his last day of service for something as petty as wearing the wrong f%$king shirt is stupid. sure, he broke a rule but damn, it was wearing the wrong colored shirt. what if they decided that every person who illegally used the car pool lane should lose a limb? sounds a bit extreme doesn't it?  ;)    and i agree with a few others on this. yes, there is probably more to this story. and yes, if it was a black (or other minority) officer and a white supervisor, the news would  be all over this 24/7 until the "wrong" was "righted".  call be racist for that remark if you like but if you honestly don't think it would have happened that way if the roles have been reversed you are either in a fantasy world or just plain f%$king dumb.  :bs:

Something as trivial as wearing the wrong color shirt on his last day of a 35 year career should not endanger anything.  They could have done the proper thing and asked him to go home and change into the proper uniform.  Maybe urged him to do so, but the man has served his time and should have been congratulated on his service instead of reprimanded over something so f%$king stupid and petty!

And of course the color of someone's skin is going to be the first thing almost anyone thinks of because the blacks of this country won't allow the whites to forget a damn thing.  Sure, they were done wrong.......BEFORE I WAS f%$king BORN!!  I could give a rats ass about how they were treated back in the20's, 30's 40's, 50's, and 60's.  I wasn't around then.  The Indians were treated so much worse than the blacks will ever be treated, but you don't see f%$king Chief Red Bone up on the tube crying and whining every time a white man says something that offends him!  C'mon man, surely people can't be that stupid!  99% of the people I know don't give a shaZam! about racism.  They just see a person.  Not the color of their skin.  I'll stop and help a black man who is broken down on the road just as fast as I will a white person.  A high percentage of blacks claim to have been treated unfairly because of the color of their skin.  I've been around the block a time or two and I can honestly say that I've witnessed much more racism towards whites than towards blacks.....and I live in MISSISSIPPI!!!  Supposedly the racist capitol of the world, according to those who have never lived/visited here anyway!  I'm just so f%$king sick and tired of people trying to make ME feel guilty because of something that was happening almost a hundred years ago!  The perception of racism is so much more dangerous to this country than actual racism will ever be.  I have a black friend who grew up in California.  Before he moved to Mississippi, his family, who had never been here before, begged him not to move here because they were afraid he would be treated like a slave and called names every day.  He told me that he couldn't believe how he was treated here.  It was such a shock for him to arrive and not see the KKK waiting to hang him!  Just because of what his family THOUGHT it was like, he was really apprehensive about moving here.  The whole f%$king country thinks that racism rules everyones' lives in the South, when in fact, it does not.  It's the perceived notion that all whites in the South are racist that keeps the entire country in an uproar over race.  Stupid shaZam! like this doesn't help matters either.

Bloody stupid beaurocrats being politically correct, I am sure that "technically" the guy did wear the wrong shirt but it's not like he wore a pointed hood or something he simply went in for a bit of nostalgia and showed respect for fallen colleagues on his last day shift, common sense would have smiled, slapped his back and turned a blind eye but when did common sense count for anything.

When i was in management I recall an incident when one of the supervisors who worked under me was due to retire, he decided to go to the last minute as his watch was on night duty (1900 - 0700hrs) and come in to work from seven untill midnight. He could have taken those last few hours off without a problem. He was a very well known and liked character who called a spade a spade and did not suffer fools easily. One of my directors phoned me that night and said he did not want to hear about any celebrations etc, I simply said that if i saw him with a glass in his hand would he like me to fire him at 2355hrs?
Common sense prevailed but some people in elevated positions can be amazingly stupid at times. The world is full of Prats.

Hey Cal, how is it over there across the pond as far as tensions between blacks and whites?  Is there any at all?

Cal Price

Hmmm tension between blacks and whites, that's a tough one. Traditionally most of Britains black population are the descendants of people who came from the Carribean to work in the reconstruction etc after WW2. Most of these people and their descendants are as British as I am.

I am sure many would point out that young black in particular are disadvantaged in many ways including employment which can make for social tension. There is a much more recent "second wave" of black people direct from Africa, many from formar colonys like Nigeria and Kenya. I don't have personal knowledge but I sense that amongst the Africans there are tensions, not just between themselves and the indigenous residents but amongst their own national and tribal groups, Africa is not a bed of roses and this spills over.

A very large part of the nonwhite population are what we call "Asians" who are mainly of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi origin - there was a mass migration in the 50s and 60s also people of the same descent being slung out of Africa by the likes of Idi Amin a bit later in the 70s. A vast number of these have integrated, started businesses and been successful through simple hard work and consequently contributed a great deal to our culture and way of life. It is fair to say that since Mr Bin-Laden came to prominence there has been a polarisation and a deepening of suspicion between our moslem population and others. A great many moslems just want to get on with their lives like pretty much everyone else but there is undoubtedly a problem hence our "home-grown" bombers etc.
My daughter's neighbor's and a biker I recently did a Euro-trip with are moslems and are perfectly reasonable people who are simply as mystified as I am about what is happening.

My perception, and this is simple what I think based upon what I see is that there is more tension and potential for problems with "Asylum seekers" from what we used to call the "near east" and also some eastern Europeans, particularly those of Romany descent who are often helped on their way by hostile populations at home in Romania, Slovakia etc etc,. There were a lot of Albanians claiming to be refugees from Kosovo as well as other people from the Balkans, some of them have bought their own ethnic-tribal issues with them and are at odds with one another as well as not being very welcome by local populations in various places. There are a smattering of people from various former soviet republics who still seem to fight one-another, I suppose that their kids might see themselves as Brits and eventually put this behind them but it might take more than one generation.

I wish I could give lewismug a simple yes-no answer but life just ain't like that, my son for instance lives in North London in an area with many Mosques and he feels much more akin to the Carribean and even Indian populations in his area.

The best answer i can give is that, yes tensions do exist but more along cultural rather than simply colour lines but all in all things are not to bad, after all the carribean and Asian influx second and third generations have done wonders for our cricket!

I also think there is more to this story.  After 35 years of service, its hard to believe that he would get suspended for wearing the wrong shirt.  Like Lewis stated, they could have just asked him to go home and change.  Maybe they did and he told them to pound sand.  That could be reason for the suspension.  It could be that his guy has a history of being insubordinate.  How knows.  Its suck being suspended in the last few minutes of your career, no question.  And its probably could have been handled more tactfully...but there something else here that's not being said.

As far as the race card...the way I see it, its pretty a low move.  As a Chinese, or of Asian decent, or Asian Canadian, or...well you get the picture, I've never used the race card (except jokingly).  It just lowers yourself to the level of those being ignorant.  Besides, I like to think that I've gotten to where I am based on my talent and skills, and not the colour of my skin, or the religion I follow.  Technically speaking, if you look-up the true definition of race, we are classified as the "Human Race".  If we were all of different "races", then there would be no option of "interbreeding".  Semantics?  Yes, but I like that argument anyways.  In the words of War..."Why can't we be friend...?"
