So, I'm looking to Project-ize my 92' GS500.
WHat I had in mind was a streetfighter project.
Two Things:
1. Paint
I was thinking of doing a flat grey or black. Any insight on if it would be a good or bad idea to use spray paint and clear coat out of a can?
2. Lights
I wanted to do a dual headlight conversion. All the kits I saw were expensive. I was thinking of using the kits they sell for cars as driving lights perhaps and fabricating my own brackets. Would this be a bad idea (As far as Voltage, amps, etc.)?

1) be careful with spray painting the tank. spray paint is too soft and gas spillage will eat paint away. Many have done the flat black spray paint-just be warned about the spillage.

2) if you run both those lights at same time you're runnign 100W. that might be too much for the electrical system. if you run one at a time (one low, one high) you should be fine. Think about what you're going to do with all the wiring that's inside the stock headlight bucket though. You may have to tuck it under the tank which *might* require splicing added length into the wires

See my post about a cheap dual headlight setup-using the Buell XB9 setup new from dealer only costs $130 but the driving lights you linked to would look more "true" streetfighter...

i'm currently redoing my gs and i used satin black spray paint on the tank. i think it looks nicer than plain flat black. i didn't even bother clear coating it. i've heard it looks nicer w/o clear coat on flat or satin black. i'll post pics soon of my tank if you want.

Do not  buy lights like that  
This is fog lights........using them you will see nothing .
Original headlight is more better  

Do not buy auxiliary lights  

You need regular headlight
I was thinking about it,also I have checked some lights.

Try to find some custom regular lights from BMW m-3  WW GOLF 3.....
It is mutch better. But you will  need to make some brackets to mount them.

The best would be Hella DE Xenon ,but they cost toooooo mutch  :dunno:

And It is one problem,using them .....only HI light.

I was also thinking about the dual headlight thing.  Triumph has a few bikes with dual headlights.  Be careful that the lights you buy will actually light up the road for you.  I put a brighter bulb in my stocker and it's like driving in daylight.  

What about doing something different?!  The dual headlight thing has been done to death already.  I'm not criticizing ... just looking for a new idea.

I like the dual headlights idea, but they should be big, like Speed Tripple, a little smaller looks cool too but the streetfighter style 'tear' like are used too often. What about a rectangular or an triandle headlight? I bet the Triangle light will look very agressive. Maybe a 'stripe' ? that will look cool but won't help you in the dark. i'm thinking with what to replace my stock light

Harley aftermarket has, or I've seen, triangle headlamps for hogs, but my personal favorite is the stacked rectangular headlamps. Reminiscent of a Yamaha 750 Seca, circa 1981.

Yah, I see the wattage issue with the lights. I was looking into some larger diameter lights, so I can run one or the other and still have visibility (Like 4" or something. I wanna stick with the dual headlight setup.)

And as far as the paint goes, II want it to look like the Ducati Monster Dark Color scheme. So would satin black be closer?

I think to get gasoline resistance you need to use an automotive paint with proper hardeners or powdercoat.  To powdercoat, you would have to strip off the old paint first.

OF COURSE, make sure the tank is empty and completely dry before powder coating!

I used standard spray pain and clear on my tank and it's been fine.  scratches easily, but it's just as easy to clean up again.  i am very careful with gas and other solvents.

Hey!  I'm not dead am I ?!?!?!    OK, so my last post was like a year ago.  Good to be back!  Sold my GS tho an' now I am riding a 89 Katana.  The Kat has lots of top end power but it is a pig in the corners.  I miss my GS .. a little.   

ok, sorry for the second ressurection, but i didn't want to be assulted for creating a new thread about headlights.

if i got the f headlight and mounts, would it be easy to swap out from the e? would i need everything from the fork tube out, or can i keep the same black brakets that go around the forks under the upper tripples? i'm considering making a bikini-ish fairing for my bike (not too hard, nice little weekend project) so i wanted to do a bit more aggressive headlight assembly but i don't want some aftermarket PITA squiddy headlight.

suggestions?

hi there,  ive just re-painted my gs including the frame, and on the tank ive used ordinary black automotive gloss...but whith a petrol resistant  laquer top coat, the  laquer takes about three weeks to fully harden  but it looks excellent, its  come out much better than i expected  and  the  petrol resistant top coat   is fine,   but i am still carefull of spillages,   my bike was blue  and  silver,  but now its  black  and  silver.......black  tank, black  front  mud guard,  and  rear plastics,  but  ive  left the frame silver  as to  break up the  black  a  bit  other wise i felt  that  black all over  was to much........i  used a paint shop program on the p.c   with a foto  of my bike  and  i  re - colored  it  on screen......just to get  some idea of what it would look like.     when its  all  finished i will post the picks.....its  taken  about  three  months.........yes  three months........but i have  completely  re-done   the  entire  gs500  including the  engine. 

                                                          god it  was hard work ....... but worth it
