I bought the bike a couple weeks ago.  The previous owner said that it ran, but not real well, so he proceeded to pull the carbs off.  winter set in and he lost interest.  This is where I come in.

I got it home, I've had the carbs apart and cleaned them 6 times now.  The last time today after they sat in Carb dip over night.

The problem: It will only idle except under choke.  As soon as you give it any gas, it dies. 

If I choke it, it will run 3-4K rpms just fine, but give it any gas and it dies.

I've inspected everything in the carb and all looks in good order, including the slide boots..no holes/tears etc.

One thing I tried is to manualy with my fingers raise the sliders and then give it gas and it revs for the most part normal.

Any ideas anyone..I'm at my wits end.  'bout ready to give it up.

did you8 completely disassemble the carbs before dipping them, what you are describing, sounds to me like a plugged jet/passage/s

Yes, I completely stripped everything off and dipped the carbs along with all the jets.  I'm stumped at this point

you might want to check your fuel it could possibly be that their is water in your fuel, i had the same problem with my bike i would start it and it would run fine for a minute and then die.  it could be part of the problem but not all of it

Before I started this project, I drained all the old gas out of the tank and put in 2 gallons of fresh gas.


I went and read the threads post above, great info, but no help in my case.

As I think I described before, if I manualy with my fingers lift the air valves while giving it throttle, it revs up and runs rather nicely.

To me the problem seems to be the air valves are not lifting up as you give it throttle to allow more air in.  What specific vac ports control this..does anyone know.
I can tell you that they do move freely against the spring pressure with the finger.

You wanna send me the carbs ... I'll rejet ($45), re ring($10) etc etc for as needed.
BTW what is air valve - diaphragm ... not lifting ... you have them ripped I have those, $5 a piece. I suspect some reassembly snafu though.

Ok..I fixed it.  I'll follow that with "I'M AN IDIOT"

LOL..I had the main jet needle rod in backwards...In other words they just rode in the air valves and did not come down thru to fit into the main jets!

I could have sworn, I payed attention to how they came out, but obviously not. 

If anything, I hope my problem will help someone else in the future, as I'm sure I'm not the first nor the last to make this mistake.

AMEN!  I blame the previous owner for everything.  Its how I make it through each day.   

Aaaaah ... OK you had no needles, so lifting the slides gave you air to go with the fuel pouring out of your emulsion tubes with no needles ... OK ... good to know.
