Choke Cable tension

I've searched the boards and can't find anything that addresses this problem.  I have a feeling that something is too tight somewhere, but here goes.  The PO didn't have a choke cable and used the throttle to warm the bike up.  I've installed a new cable recently.  The problem I'm having is that the choke won't stay on after I pull it forward.

I've "fixed" my left hand assembly so that all the parts are installed for the choke cable.  The problem is that either 1) the tension on the cable is so high that the system in the assembly can't hold the choke on or 2) I didn't install everything correctly.  I should say that I'm missing the front screw that holds the upper and lower pieces of the assembly together, but even if I hold it together the problem still persists.   The assembly is extremely simple so I doubt that I've installed it incorrectly since I've consulted my Haynes manual as well.  Any ideas?

Does it return immediately, or sloooowly? (just trying to get a handle on how bad the problem is).

I assume you are referring to this thread:

So it's all fixed now?

The only thing pulling the choke cable back out is a spring. If there really is excess force pulling back on the cable, I guess it is because a non-OEM spring is being used or the spring is not seated correctly.

Compare your setup with this superb picture of properly-assembled carbs (borrowed from Starwalt):

It's almost like there's no friction at all as it pulls back rather quickly.  I'll check the spring seating at the carbs.  Thanks for the tip :thumb:

Sounds like the return spring is not engaged, or may not be the correct spring tension - did a PO swap it for one from Ace Hardware by any chance, or is it OEM? The spring keeps the tension in it when it is in operation.

The spring seems to fit well and has quite a bit of tension although I'm not sure if it's OEM or not.

I'm thinking the problem is not with the spring at the carb, but the spring (etc.) at the handle.
Sounds like you have no friction on the handle end to hold it on place.
Parts 6-7-8-9 should be applying pressure to the choke lever to hold it in place...

+1 That's what it sounds like to me as well.

I have all of those parts installed correctly but I don't have part 4 right now.  although, holding it in place doesn't make it work either.
