this is an old hat trick. Just the other day I read a thread on thegsresources about a guy who put a gsxr1100 motor into a gs550e. Measure it up, if it'll fit, you're good to go. It'll stick out the sides a bit, but I'll bet the frame is strong enough, but either way I'd weld in some bracing. You will need a new swingarm/shock/wheels/tires/fork/brakes, because the GS500 is lacking in that area to begin with

Gaaa ... the GSXR 1100 air oil motor will fit in any 4cyl air oil bike ... katana 600, 750, Bandit 600 etc ...
The GS550 possibly also has similar dimensions and locations of mounts.
Like the FZR 1000 motor fitting an FZR 400. If the castings the cases are made from are the same its a fair bet you can stuff one in another. GSXR1100 motor in a GSXR 750 frame ... you heard of the 2 finger test ??? it will fail that, its taller.
The GR in the GS is also near about the same thing. The motor will fit with very small mods, the exhaust pipe will not without a full blown custom pipe work.
Cool.
