How do you remove the old crush washer from the drain bolt when doing an oil change?  (It seems quite well attached, tried prying at it with a screwdriver, have had zero luck).

Thanks!

I've never removed or replaced one in 370k total miles of oil changes, the last 140k miles on GS500s.

Hi there,
While Jack hasn't replaced one (who knows why), you can hold the bolt with the proper sized wrench then use a pliers or a channel lock pliers to "turn" the washer off of the bolt.
Presto, then the new one slips right on.
It's always a good idea to replace the crush washer every time you remove the drain plug.
Crush washers, copper washers, gaskets, cotterpins -- such parts are consumables and should be replaced each time they are unfastened.
They are one-use materials.
It's cheap insurance.
Just do it. :)
Then you can ride and enjoy your machine and not sit on the side of the road with a breakdown due to the failure of a cheap part that you were too cheap to replace.  :)
Best wishes,

As Trwhouse said: They're cheap, so why not replace them?
Using the old one can work, but doesn't necessarily have to. Same goes with the O-ring under the oil filter cover.

It's been over 2 months since we've kicked this crush washer thing around, must be a new record.     It's always easier to ask again than it is to search.

There's no comparison between dried out rubber seals like oil filter cover gaskets or valve cover gaskets and metal seals like the oil drain crush washers.

LOL GSjack.

I haven't changed one either.

One crush gasket should last the life of the motorcycle if the oil plug isn't over torqued.
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?
