I saw a katana on craigslist that was all apart in boxes, the motor was on the rolling chassis but everything else was off. It did come with good fairings, tank, seats, wiring harness, lights, etc. However, the owner said the motor was dumping out smoke and one cylinder had oil in it. The bike aside from this is in pretty good condition and came with a title. odometer says engine has less than 5000 miles on it. My options here are to part it out, try and fix the motor, use the front end for my gs and part out the rest, or try and locate a running kat motor.....

finding a motor seems to be pretty easy.....what would you do?

Part it , and use the front end and rear shock ,

I had a katana i bought just for parting to get a front end , i thought it handled like a pig , to big and heavy , plus they look horrable 2

Fairings are worth money . same with the Titled Frame ,

the idea of getting it running is intriquing to me...Its in good enough shape to where I think if I can make it ride okay, it will be worthwhile. Katana motors don't seem to be worth very much so I think I can just pick up a "new" motor and throw it in....we will see.

Could be interesting to get it running and then see how you like it. There's a student here that's got a later model red one and he seems to like it well enough.

You gonna need em if you're fancying getting it running.
But I know of atleast 1 clown who'd pay $5 a needle for them kat needles, and say $50 for a whole carb off a kat.
OK OK ... its me ... and the parts will cross into a GS, except on some older kats the floats and the seat spigot are all 1 piece and you cant get the float needle out. Those the whole assy fits the GS carbs like a glove but you cant split it and adjusting it is also very tricky ... That's all that is a gotcha ... the kat carbs are identical to GS carbs otherwise, fix and adjust them the same way and same partsm needles, slides, diaphragms, floats etc etc.
Cool.
