ive been looking for a spare motor for my 06 w/20k & i found a 2003 motor. can i easily use it in my 06 without alot of mods? would it just be a matter of swapping parts from the 06 to the 03 motor? anyone have any tips for inspecting the used motor since i cant hear it run? like rotate it with a wrench, inspect cam ect...

The Buddha

You should check with suzuki ... as to what they were calling a GS500 in 2003 ... cos they didn't make one ...

The Buddha

Oil pan and cooler from 06 will have to go on the 02 as will the ignition trigger and advancer etc etc.

where can i get how to info on such a swap? (02 into 06) also im kinda confused because i googled and found alot of info on the 2003 gs500e. but nothing that said if the motor was differant. i thought you said they didnt make one that year?

Chuck

It may have been made in 2003, but as far as I know, there was no 2003 model year for the GS500.

Since you have all your 2006 parts, you should be able to swap everything you need with no trouble.

Is there something wrong with your engine?  20K miles doesn't sound like too many.

Chanse

Check with the DMV before you swap, some areas are tougher than others, But it is illegal in alot of places to stick an older engine (ie. the 03) into a newer vehicle (ie. the 06). This is because of the emmissions qualifications and such. However it is perfectly legal to swap say an 06 motor into an older vehicle like the 03 because the emissions would have improved in the newer model. So check with your local office before you waste alot of time and money.

And so on......

2003 was not available in the US. It was available in foreign markets.
Common sense in not very common.

arbakken

you'll be fine, I wouldn't worry about it... the only difference is the carbs, ignition, and oil cooler

The Buddha

OK I think he is in US ... and while some states (CA and NY) have engine numbers in the title, I dont believe - ca I know for sure any of the states checks engine numbers at any time.
Then we never run emmissions on bikes in any state, and states that have inspections are limited to lights and tires and maybe some other safety features, like horn, T/S'es types. Emmissions are certified and cleared by manufacturer and that is it. We can swap anything we want at any time we want ... never have an issue.
If he's not in the US, delete everything I just said.

I can confirm that NY does not have engine numbers on titles.  My 2001 engine / 2004 frame is legally 2004.

The Buddha

Huh, I could have swore I have seen in 1 title. Maybe NJ ?

thanks for the info guy's. I was wondering about that mvd stuff, i thought i read something about not being allowed to use older motors in newer bikes . But the vins not found anywhere on the motor so how would anyone know?  I found the motor for $100 and thought about buying it as backup when mine takes a dump. Mines feeling a little tired and seems like im adding more oil (every 1-2 weeks) than before, but i do ride 60-70 miles a day 90% freeway 70-80mps with stock gearing. Also mine was running really lean for 8k miles or so durning the summer and i  just know it took a liitle life off it.

So i can bolt my 2006 parts on the earlier motor and just ignore the missing oil cooler, right? What about the carb? i should use the 06 ones right?
i wanna buy it but im just not sure. couple good things.... it turns smooth with a wrench, sounds like it compressing air when you turn it, cam and chain look good, valve buckets spin freely. its not rusty, not leaking, oil is clean and at the right level but it looks like its been sitting out of the the bike for a while. (outside) why???

What is the change in the ignition that requires the parts be swapped?
