I just drove 150 miles from home to pick up my new gs and thought I should change the oil before riding it home.

now the oil filter cover is leaking and I cant get it to stop. I did not get a new gasket and I am thinking thats the problem.

The old gasket looks like its in perfct shape but i wonder if it is just to old and flattened to do any good.

I read that the fram filter may come with a gasket but I am not sure. I have to fix the leak today or I wont be able to get my new bike home.

Any ideas on how to fix this problem on a sunday?  If anybody in the dfw area has a spare gasket that would be awesome, even if it is a used one from a previous oil change.

FRAM CH6000 should be the filter & o ring you want. Buy some black RTV while you're at it. Be very careful with the nuts, they'll break the (MADE OF CHEESE) studs off if you over torque them !

Smear a little of the black RTV (A LITTLE, NOT ALLOT ! ) in the o-ring groove to hold the o-ring in place while you're installing the oil filter cover. The cleaner the cover the better it seals.

The o-rings are designed to swell when they contact oil, may have something to do with the heat also, i dunno.

While we're on the subject:

Checking your oil, do this before starting it, and after it's been warmed assuming the oil level is fine when it was cold ;)

Remove dipstick, wipe.
Replace dipstick WITHOUT SCREWING IT IN, check level. In the hashes is good, OVER the hashes means you won't shift smoothly and risk damage. UNDER the hashes means risking damage again.
Replace and screw in dipstick. Check for leaks again.

Check your oil at each gas stop. It's a new-to-you bike and you have no idea the oil consumption rate of the machine yet. :)

Welcome !

Awesome thanks for the help, oreilly has the fram in stock so I'll give that a try. Does it sound like the gasket is the likely culprit of my leak? Is it possible for a leak to result if the cover bolts are too tight?

na, the cover might be warped, or nicked or whatever. if the nuts are too tight, you'll usually pull a stud out or break it.

the o ring is my bet.

 sweet it was the gasket I took your advice and put a small amount of rtv in and it worked like a charm.
