Try a ventura rack and bag the rack can act like a sissy bar while giving you the ability to carry luggage on it. Though I have noticed they dont seem to be popular in the US although in Australia every 2nd bike has one and they are the ducks guts :thumb:

I looked and have basically decided I'm going to have to make one. I might make more than one, but that project won't start for several months, at minimum. Got too many other things (not even remotely bike-related) that need to get done first.
1990 GS500EL - with moderately-ugly paintjob.
1982 XJ650LJ -  off the road for slow repairs
AGATT - All Gear All The Time

Any developments in the quest? I'm also looking for a solution that apparently doesn't exist. I want a bar that can serve as a post mount for my backpack (pack hung behind), allowing me to still use the Nelson-Rigg tailpack I already own and throw another bag on top of that against the bar. When that config isnt' needed, I'll slip a pad on so my wife has a back rest. Still looking...checking with Ventura to see if they have an option, as they list through 2005 and my GS is an '07 model. We'll see...

I made one a few years ago ... I can mod it or make all new ... but It be like $50-75. It also will nool 1/2 decent and you can choose your height and material.
It will fit like it was made for it after I am done with it ...
BTW mm75658 - you're talking about a back rest, so I guess your handling problem is fixed ? what was it ??? uneven tire wear ... too much pressure ... somehting else ...
Cool.

That is the link ... I dont believe having a volume is gonna make much difference and I can do semi custom ... its just hand cut aluminum and welding by sorta holding it in place.
I wont get to it till november first week earliest ... but we have lived without sissy bars/luggage rack for 20 years so what is 20 days ...
BTW this one is made to carry either a long tote partly over the seat and it or a milk crate just on it or a vanity style tool case with holes for a U bolt clamp.
Cool.

Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

My first thought when I saw this thread.

The Buddha

Givi actually provides a big platform type thing with steel bars and this and that that sweep under and bolt to the tubing under the seat ... if you can pay for that thing that is ...
The whole idea of this ... it can take a givi style box but at a fraction of the $$$ and uses the thing we already have.
Givi setup also is rather huge for the GS. The size of a coffin ... Cos waaaaay back when I made this, I saw that thing and decided to make something else myself.

Do you think this style of rack would hold as much weight as the Givi style rack that bolts up under the seat? I have a Givi case and I've been waiting on another rack for it, but if this will do the trick...

The Buddha

You see ... most of the weight of the givi rack will carry is the rack itself ...  :thumb: ...
I actually think its gonna be close ... and one time in 01/02 I started to tear the part that the thing bolts to on that 89. I had it welded back on and it was great ... however the way and the direction it tore is because of the fact that I was using that thing for putting it on the stand, taking it off the stand and for general muscling around like tying down the bike in the truck or moving the bike side to side or spinning it on center stand.
So I guess worst case - brace that thing a bit with a welder ... its steel, it should be nothing to have a muffler shop put in a little weld on.
Also remember I have designed it for putting a long tote style bag on the seat and tying to this ... Its gotta be designed for what you need ... then it will work better ... I can triangulate it just like givi to the part under the seat too ... I also have a bar I made for a nighthawk 650 that I ahve a enduro rack on the back of the sissy bar.

Ooo, triangulating something like this to under the seat would be super cool... How much would you charge for such awesomeness?

Waaa ... OK what exactly you mean ...
The thing is 3 pieces of pipe welded to the aluminum sissy bar ... Now triangulating it to the part under the seat will go on the outside of the tail section and under it like givi ... Or maybe I can get it into that part under the seat bearing point and it can just pressure fit there ... Which of the 2 ...
The first part will be much more, the second part will be a little more ... my guess is $50 -75 depending on the rack you want ... add 50-60 for the first, where it sweeps under to the railing part under the tail section, and add $10 for the second where short braces come to the area under that lip the seat block rests on.
I can make a lot of different things. I have done so for over 10 years on the GS, only question is, are people willing to pay for it. This thing was very very useful in my bay area life. I move to charlotte and never needed it. I can mod this and have it get under the seat part for strength ...
Cool.
