Just bought a K&N Stage 3 Jet Kit for the GS off of e-bay.  Appearantly the kit comes with the jet kit, the filters, and a crankcase breather.  

My questions:
K&N Jet Kits are rebadged Dynojet kits right?
Has anyone installed a Stage 3 or do most Streetriders install the Stage 1 kits?

I was reading about the Stage 3 and they mention a possible loss in mileage and such.  Being this bike will be a commuter - am I best off leaving it alone and not installing the Stage 3?  I was also planing on installing a slip-on exhaust (some older reverse-cone muffler - I think it's a JC Whittney  :dunno: ).

For commuting, a stage 3 will hurt your gas mileage. They are not known for rideability... just power. A stage 1 sounds like the one for you.

Until I get the jet kit, I'm not sure what's in there...

In order to achieve the Stage 1 "level" would I just exclude the pods and only use the jet kit?

Wonder how much of an effect it will have on the mileage.

I did the Srinath "stage 3" by putting in Mikuni 150 mains along with 40 pilots and raising the needle with 2 washers.  I don't think my mileage has suffered too much, maybe 5-6 mpg or so.  I find my mileage varies a lot more with the type of riding a do, especially when I head the canyons for a couple of extended high-rpm runs.

That's right.  Plus, use the smaller of the 2 MJ sizes supplied w/kit.

Tune it for mileage by dropping the needle a notch from default position and/or remaining within a half rotation from stock on the pilot screw.  

If your GS is primarily a commuter you probably don't need the additional maintenance, noise, and ratbike image associated with Stage 3.

What additional maintence are you talking about here?  Seems maintenance would be easier without the bulk of the air box in the way and the ability to get the carbs in and out with less effort.  

I'm think to just wait until the kit comes in and think it through with a local independent shop...

Being exposed to the elements they need more frequent oiling than a similiar box filter.  Too easy to clog these gauze filters with excess oil, and then there are those who claim K&N's lead to early ring jobs.  Had to enclose mine with baggies everytime I washed the bike.

This is true.  Not a problem if the bike isn't left inactive for more than 6 months without either running the motor or draining the floatbowls.

Yes and a canadian bike already has 40 pilots in them...
