Hot Grips F style

i was wondering  if any1 has installed heated grips in particular Hot Grips on an F the Wiring is different then on an E and im no electriction so atm i have mine going straight from the battery which is annoying bc i have to disconnect constantly so if any1 has done it and wont mind throwing some tips my way i would be much obliged

I got an e no an f, but i believe if you put an inline on/off swtch that could terminate the power by interupting the circut. My buddy has a zusuki vx800, similar overall style to the gs, w/ the heated grips and his switch is in between the tach and speedo.its always off until he flips it up, its a up/down toggle( radio shack like 5 bucks). But im also not an expert on wiring so someone else may help too.

What grips are you installing? I ask because some have battery-minder circuitry which requires direct (non-regulated) battery voltage.

You need some sort of on/off switch in the wire from the battery, preferably where you can reach/see it easily. Even better, run a relay and take the feed for it off your ignition so it turns the grips off when you switch the motor off even if you forget to do it. Your lead from the battery should also be fused.

Make sure the switch is weatherproof. I got mine at a boating supply store.

I'd try handguards and glove liners before taking on the Headache of Dubious Utility that is heated grips.

Handguards ... bwaaa ... maybe if he had the stock bar ... he can have fitted wider dirt bars and those take the brush guards well, and you can fir those plastic pieces that screw on to the rail things ... like a dirt bike ... he's swapped to kat bars ... maybe that extra 3-4 inches room I left on them can be used for guards maybe ... unless he's cut em ...
BTW r'gal - CA is dry, it can be cold but its never humid when cold. In the central Carolina area I live in it usually is dry in winter ... but he lived in the mountains in northern NC. In the blue ridge ... and it is just about the wettest place on the planet ... humid and soppy wet, you can squueze the water out of the air ... round the year ... so he's gonna need all the help he can get ...

Hey, I got DL handguards on stock GS bars!  And that was in Seattle.   ;)

Stock bars yes, not on the kat FE he has with the fairing barely clearing on one side and the tank on the other. I had to make bent bars and I had to get it just exact ... too much and it hit the fairing, too little and it hits the tank ... I'm gonna say he cant fit anythign but grips for warmth.
OK is seattle humid in winter ??? ... all 11 months of it are ??? huh ... I didn't know. Global warming - its not a myth, its our best hope ...

Splice into the orange cable, its only live with the ignition turned on.

I totally agree.  Heated grips are the best things I've put on my bike.  And cheaper (and better) than winter gloves!  :thumb:

If you dont need them on year round, like on the nice summer days on the parkway, you should get a switch (waterproof) so you can turn them on and off. What if you ride to the beach and its like 100 degrees / 100 % humidity and you cant turn off the heated grips unless you turn the ignition off? Makes sense to me.

Any orange one will do, it really doesnt matter. The orange is only live with the ignition on.

You can ground out to the frame or to the black wire with white bands.....but NOT the white wire with black bands.
