Are there any CAD modelers in the house?

I have a drawing of the custom steering stem that I drew in Illustrator. It's not drawn to scale and I was wondering if anyone could convert the vector drawing to a CAD drawing which is up to scale with all the correct measurements. It can be done in 2D only, but 3D would be cool too

I'd really appreciate any help.

I have a copy of Autodesk Illustrator and would be willing to give it a try if you gave me the specifications and dimensions.  Are you trying to have it made?  Give me all the info and I'll give it a try, can promise anything as I have no real training though!!

I'm an architectural draftsman... not much experience with mechanical engineering but lots of experience with CAD stuff.

thow up the pic and the dimensions I'm sure one of us could get it right for you... worth a shot eh?

Yea the CAD drawing will be used as a guideline for the machinist. The steering stem will be used to fit an 06 GSXR front end to the GS.

I've emailed both of you the raw Illustrator .ai file as well as a .pdf copy.

Here's a JPEG of it (click to enlarge):

Thanks for your help!

I've pretty much done solid modeling (and other product engineering work) at my job for the past 2 years using Autodesk Inventor.  I think there may even be a way for me to import the file you have directly into Inventor (not sure, seem to remember Inv '09 being able to do this).  PM me if you'd like me to help...

EDIT:  Pfffttt..... I just looked at that drawing after I posted, I think I could model it up for you and still have enough time left to whore all the message boards I frequent during my lunch break.

I saw that someone else already offered to help, but I figure I'll take a stab at it myself.  At the very worst you'll have 2 copies of it in the end.

omrimon

It's not urgent guys, you can take your time with it.

Nemesis, if you want to take a stab at it, go for it! I'd love to see it as a 3D model.

I tried exporting the .ai file to .dwg and open it in AutoCAD but it appears as a flat pancake steering stem.

By the way, what's the difference between AutoCAD and Inventor?

arbakken

I just did it in solidworks... how do you want it?

Hiya,
I teach AutoDesk 2D and 3D software... some mechanical and a lot of Architectural Desktop and Revit too... pop a copy of your file over to me... it might get me on the imperial settings as I'm used to millimetres nowadays but I'd give it a go... no Inventor useage though so it would be AutoCAD 3D... 2009/2008/2007 version? What version do the Machinists need?
cheers

WOW, that was quick. Thanks man.

You can send it to omrimon AT gmail DOT com.

If you can send both the solidworks file and a .pdf copy or .dwg if solidworks can export to this type of file.

Cheers!

i gotta remember how to make the dwg. ALso, in case it matters, I can't do the threads. I'll email it to you later tonight

Hey,

Sorry for the slight delay, I was busy as hell at work today and didn't take a lunch     .  Anyway, I got it done at home here, and was wondering how you wanted me to present it?  I have the solid model done w/ all the threads included, would you like a dimensioned drawing as well?  You also said you use Illustrator, will that allow you to view .dwf files?  I can convert this easily to that so you can spin it around and fly through it even if you please  .  One thing though, I don't think it'll be possible, or necessary to put the bottom fillet (radius) on there.  There really isn't much material there to work with, and it'd probably be better to just have the machinist make sure it's deburred there, and they'll probably get it to where you need it anyway.  Correct me if I'm wrong though.  Out of curiosity, what are you making this out of?

Oh, almost forgot, PM me your e-mail and I'd be happy to send this to you however you like.

EDIT...AGAIN!  I forgot, I wasn't sure where you wanted the tapering down to be at a minimum on the 129mm feature so I put it dead in the middle at 64.5.  If you'd like this to change let me know, it's easy enough.  I may also suggest if you can't view .dwf files, either dl DWF viewer from autodesk's website, or dl the whole Autodesk Inventor LT program (free 3D modeling s/w) from their Labs website.  That's what I used for this as my copy of Inventor 11 Pro is not working right now

omrimon

Nemesis, I have AutoCAD installed on this machine so a .dwf is perfect. A dimensioned drawing will be nice too. I'd love to see it flying around

Regarding the bottom fillet, the GSXR stem, from which I took the measurements, is filleted there. It actually narrows down to 29.10mm right bellow the lower 30mm threads.

It's probably going to be made out of 7075 T6 aluminum.

PM sent with email address

Thanks buddy!

Pat, email sent with the files. The measurements are in mm so you're in luck  :icon_razz:

I'm not familiar with the backwars/forwards computability of AutoCAD so I'll let you decide. I'm using the 2008 version.

Thanks!
