Good evening,

a question about the difference between high and low beam on the above motorcycle. The high/low beam (or undipped/dipped for the Brits) bulb is 60/55 W. I've noticed that when I flash with the low (dipped) beam on, the headlight gives out a nice, full, all-round beam of light. When I switch from low to high beam, however, the 60 W filament comes on, but the 55 W goes out. Is this correct?

I have to add that I checked the wiring diagram, and it appears that this is the way the headlight bulb is wired. It's a shame, because when it's very dark/raining, I wouldn't mind having both filaments on at the same time (same as when I flash with the low beam on).

Many thanks to all of you who will answer my question, and all the best - Nic

You do have it right, only one filament is supposed to be on at a time. The easiest possible thing to do would just to get a different bulb with higher wattage filaments. You'd still have only one on at a time, but if they were both brighter, you'd be able to see better. Also, check the focus of your headlight. You can focus it to get maximum use out of the light you do have. When I got a new headlight, I read this site.. It seemed to have a decent explanation of what you're looking for:

I'd try focusing first then a brighter bulb, and if that's still not doing it for you, the sky is the limit. Plenty of people here have multiple headlights, HID kits and all kinds of other crazy mods to get more light or a different look...

A mod that i read about and never got around to doing on my DRZ400 was wiring up the headlight so that in normal operation with the headlight on you have the standard light then when you flick to high beam you get both filaments lighting (high and low beams together) for a wider spread at the same time as a longer light. Its a simple mod , just swapping wires. Plenty of DRZ guys do it and have no problems with wiring or battery.
I guess it could be applied to a GS just the same both being Suzis and the wiring similar...... Ill try and  find a link if your interested.   :thumb:
