I'm asking for a bit of your generosity.

I've been building some radio control rock crawling scale trucks as a hobby, mostly from scratch. Well, I'm going to start building another one in a bit and this one will be raffled off with the proceeds going to the American Diabetes Association, http://www.diabetes.org/home.jsp .

My mom is diabetic and her kidneys failed a couple years ago due to it. She's doing Dialysis 3x a week and my sister and I keep tabs on her health (sister's a nurse). Mom's doing fine. its a long story how I got to the point of doing a charity build, but if you're interested I'll share it.

Anyway, I'm short of funds to do a build, given how slow work has gotten, and would ask you to make a donation to my build, via paypal. It can be for any amount of money, a few dollars would be fine, anything $1 and up. Lots of the guys on the RC forums are also donating small parts that I will either use or sell to fund project and paypal allows me to order online and never have to actually handle any money. I have also recently become an official scale parts tester (chassis, axle hop-ups, etc) and will be getting discounts on parts through that. I also have some parts I can use in my spare parts box. Overall I'll probably need $400 or so total.

The finished truck will be raffled off at the National scale championship competition (yes, there is such a thing) in May. Not sure where it will be this year but last year it was in Montana. Raffle tickets will be sold shortly before that time. This donation is strictly towards the cost of materials for the build, and does not give you a raffle ticket.

If interested, Paypal to pablo(at)pma-architect(dot)com any amount you'd like. Make sure SCALE or something like that is in the subject so I can keep tabs of it.

I'm building something like this, but starting with a shorter 2dr body, splicing two together to make a 4dr. Mine wont be a Land Rover though. It will be a Mitsubishi Montero. I'll be making the body from scratch as well.

also, just to show what I do, here's a video of a recently completed truck. This ford crew cab, done in Angeles National Forest theme, was made by splicing together two regular cab truck bodies. the chassis was made of 1/2" steel tubing, bent and split down the middle to form C channel chassis with cross members brazed in. nearly every aspect of this truck was modified in some way to make it work for this build, from narrowing the axles (which are sourced, like most of the parts, from other types of RC vehicles), to making the wheels fit, to reducing and narrowing the tires to fit, etc...

i had a dodge raider (same as the mitsu) and it was allot of fun. bashed it through woods, creeks, mud, rocks, and it served me for 140,000 trouble free miles before i sold it.

good luck with the build, and i'm a little confused about if you're using a full size vehicle or a model :|

sorry i'm dumb :)

but i'm smart enough to know how to donate some cash. first build pictures, i'll hit the paypal button :)

He is building a scale size RC rock crawler truck to be raffled off and the $$ given to charity and wants to know if we will donate to the build.
I think it's a good cause.

you guys crack me up and also thanks for the support. The trucks I make are 1:10 scale, but that varies a bit body to body. The ford is a little small for 1:10. Wheel base on the ford is 12", wheel base on the toyota is 13"

The Montero build won't be posted for a few weeks still. I secured a company sponsor and don't want to post the body pics till I have their prototype chassis. I'll be working on the body as soon as I can get two of them. The pictures below show what I am capable of. The Montero build will also likely feature a full exo cage and some other steel tube work as well as the styrene (plastic) body work on the outside and interior.

lets see if I can find a picture that shows the trucks in actual size (I usually try to photograph them to look as real/1:1 as possible)
be back in a few...

here is one. The ford crew cab I built for myself is on the table I am brazing on. Yes, that is trailside repairs, lol...

and here it is in all its scale glory:

the last truck I built was also a crew cab. here are a few pics of what I can do:
the parts (one bed, two cabs)

shortened the bed by 1"

cut cabs, glued them, skinned the roof and added some detail around the door handles

added details to bed

threw on some color, bedliner and did some prelim testing

made steel front 'smittybuilt' bumper. made off-road light mounts, made headlights (long story), made wheels, reduced tires, painted stripes...note scratches from 'testing', lol

then the ford crew cab:
started as two bodies:

cut them and joined them

added 1/2" to length, cut bedcover out and made a full drop bed

rolled edge a nice detail, no?

cut chassis from 1/2" square tube-
first shaping with heat

then splitting it to make C channels

finished chassis next to my foam board mock up

rolling chassis. 12" wheel base axle to axle

made diamond plate tool box, details to body, graphics

made wheels for it

working headlights and light bar

no, no...actually what happened is that I made a front bumper but didnt have the flame to braze it together. a friend brought the MAPP gas, vise and table to a get together we had and I quickly brazed up the bumper before we started driving (and before the forest rangers caught us, lol).

this black push bar/bumper:

how much are one of these trucks?

Depends. You can do it for as cheap as $350-$400 if you're new to the hobby (you'll have some one time costs like a battery charger and transmitter. Best to start with a kit like the axial scx10 (or sc10?) which is a good basis for a scale truck. they also have a RTR (ready to run) truck which if you got the xtrail chassis and a body could get you started as well. tamiya makes a few kits that are good starters, like the hilift and hilux, but you also need to buy a radio and a few things to make it run (all needed parts are listed when you buy the kit). they also have a cr-01 and the pajero (less capable, more scale type chassis action).

I probably have $400-$800 in each rig, not counting the countless hours on making my own parts...

thanks to those of you that so graciously gave donations! I truly appreciate every dollar donated.

One last request...please, I realize in these tough economic times charity becomes less a priority to many but if you could give literally $1, $2, $3 or $5 to the charity build it would be greatly appreciated. if 5 or 10 of you that haven't given yet could give even a dollar that gets me that much closer to the goal.
Thank you greatly for all your generosity.
