I'm not a fan of that exhaust. The work you put in is just awesome. I really REEEALY like the rear subframe and Ducati seat. This is giving me ideas... :thumb:

Thanks for the complements!  I have heard differing opinions on the exhaust.  I love the way it looks!  I tried different exhaust setups and this worked and looked the best IMO.  However, I have recently come up with another idea for the exhaust but it will have to wait.  I really want to get this bike on the road!!

Here are some random pics from the build.

This is how the bike looked the day I got it.

I pulled the top end of the engine off and found a broken cam chain guide.  So in order to replace the cam guide I had to split the case.  So the engine basically got a complete rebuild.

I tried to get the bike started this weekend to find that my starter was dead.  I have a new starter on the way, so hopefully I'll have it running this week...hopefully.

Like the gold wheels.  I thought about doing the same.  Will probably go with a lighter color now, seeing yours.
I'd like to see you lose the lower muffler, it just doesn't fit.
Nice work on the tail area.  But, please take off the plastic trim on the sides.  It looks horrible to me, and completely throws off the look you're trying to achieve.  Just doesn't look like your original photoshop, which was beautiful.

If there's any way you can incorporate a smaller digital gauge set, that bike would be drool-able.  Of course, with just the right targa-type fairing, it wouldn't look bad either.  But, please definitely don't get caught up in the front lower dam thing, I think it completely ruins the effect.   I've thought long and hard about a set-up just like yours.  Somehow with the gold wheels, it seems sportier.  Like almost a street bike cross with a motard.  Makes it seem a little higher off the ground, with better suspension clearance and all.  I think it's just gorgeous.

Please try to do everything you can to hide wiring and such, and maybe splurge on thicker engine case covers.  Perhaps, say, polished or something a little fancier than simply cast.  Machined might look okay.  Not sure how this might look, exactly, but just a thought.  The original engine color in your photoshop wasn't black, and somehow seemed like a nice touch.

Please don't take offense.  I know you've worked hard on this thing.

what made you change your mind from the undertail exhaust to the duc setup?   I personally would love to see an undertail setup so you can showcase that sexy seat.

Also in your photo'chop' pic you have a blue cowl on the seat... did you change your mind there too?

Thanks for the comments!  I love hearing what people think of my project.

I thought about just using the top muffler.  I tried it and it just didn't look right to me.  I really like the look of the two mufflers so that stays for now.  The plastic trim also "finishes" the sides nicely IMO.

I will be adding a digital gauge setup in the future, but for now I'll use the stock analog gauges so I can get the bike on the road!  I can add things like that later.

I never even entertained the idea of adding the lower air dam.  I think it looks much better without it.  Also all the wiring under the seat is completely hidden.  The wiring behind the headlight will also be hidden.

The original photoshop engine color was silver, but since this is a 95 the original engine color was black.  It was just easier to paint it back the original color.

Thanks again for the input and I have not take any offense to any of the comments.

The undertail looks cool in the photochop, but it is very hard to make work.  There would not be much room for wiring under the seat and since the real seat isn't as high as the seat in the photochop there isn't quite enough room between the seat and the tire.  Routing the exhaust pipe would have also been a pain.  Also taillight, signal and tag lights would have been harder to fabricate.  However the seat and wheel is showcased from the left side quite nicely!  :)

A seat cowl will be added.  I just haven't been able to find an affordable one for sale.  It is hard for me to spend $100+ on such a small piece of plastic!  :o  I will have one soon though.

Thanks for the comments!

Some guy on here made a cowl just using an english wheel and sheet metal.  Might work for you.
The world thanks you for not trying to add the front air dam.  It looks good on some bikes, but definitely not yours.

I know what you mean about the gauges, also.  I'm in a similar condition with my nonexistant college budget.  Thanks for not taking offense, though.  I'm definitely not trying to sharpshoot you.  I figured that's what happened with the engine color, and it's not a big deal.  It's sort of missing something, though, and I can't put my finger on it.  Something to give you a better realization that the bike is a machine for going fast, not just looking shiny.  That's why I was saying about the thicker engine cases; something looking fresh out of the machine shop.  Something like that might help, but I still can't really put my finger on it.

I applaud you, actually, for not switching to a wider rear tire.  It's a whole lot of effort for not much pay off.  And, on your bike it's not necessary.  Looks more like a downtown city-communter with traffic dodging being your main importance, not scraping pegs.  (That's what I like about it, not sure if that's what you were going for.)

And, hey, it's your exhaust - you paid for it.  Do whatever you like.
Wish I hadn't said what I did about the wiring - of course you're gonna try to hide it as much as possible (not like there's alot there anyway).  Duh.

I still would like to see it without the plastic under the seat.  It just reminds me of a hot girl with a pooch.  Everything looks great, and then you like down and see that pot-belly.  Same reason I don't like the original tail plastic.  It's black and fairly subdued, though.  But, you've done a great job, and I'm really just nitpicking.  Love the build, and your methodology of building to a photoshop rendition.  Reminds me of my engineering days.

wladziu

Since you and I have fairly the same taste, how about tell me what you think about my current rebuild.  I just got the frame back from powdercoating (decided to go black with metal flake, wheels and all), and will probably go with the brightest yellow I can find for the tank.  The motor's black, and didn't need alot of touching up.  New rotors with the gold anodizing.  I couldn't find a tail design I liked before I powdercoated, so I stuck with OEM.  Yours is pretty much what I was looking for, so I'll have to figure out how to bolt on an assembly, instead of welding.  I'd like to know if it's really a nutbuster, though, like Buddha said.  Have you ridden it yet?

cosmiccharlie

I don't have the skill or tools to make a cowl, so I'll just buy one eventually.

I think what it is missing is the front end.  I will eventually add a GSXR inverted front end.  I think the larger and anodized gold fork tubes will make it look 1000x better!  8)  The billet engine case covers would look cool, but I think they would look out of place on the black engine.

I also see no need for a tire wider than the 150 I have on it.  It will be a bike mainly used to get me back and forth to work.

"Hot girl with a pooch"   Well I like the side plastics.  They are much smaller than the stock plastics and I still think they finish the rear subframe nicely.  Without them the subframe looks like it is unfinished to me.  To each his own I guess.

Will do!

cosmiccharlie

You should start a thread here showing the progress of your build.  I'd love to see pics of it!

I think it would be hard to make a bolt on subframe, but it could be done.

I had the bike running the day after I bought it and rode it down my street on the plywood seat!   I haven't ridden it since the new seat frame was fabricated, but it feels pretty comfortable just sitting on it in the garage.

I'll try to put up a bunch of pictures this weekend, thanks for the interest!  I'm not changing the front end or tail at the same time, though, so I doubt it will draw much interest.
You're right, the forks would definitely make the difference.  Would definitely trump case covers, especially gold anodized like that.  I wrote it off for my bike, cause of my college budget and body weight vs the bling-factor.  On yours, though, that would be very nice.  I'm gonna want to see the thing in person.

Depending on how bad you want that cowl, though, you wouldn't need an english wheel.  I was gonna try it on mine, just cutting some sheet with tin-snips.  Bend it over as aesthetically as possible, then pop rivet or use those plastic little inserts (the little black things on the inside of the left part of the frame, holding those clips on; also used in automotive door panels).  I'm trying to talk you into doing it, so I can see what it looks like.  Hahaha.

It's a race to the finish, though.  I'll have mine put back together this weekend, if the bearings come in on time.  We'll have to go on a ride, sometime, to see if fluorescent yellow is faster than gold.

wladziu

Oh, and check out the thread I made yesterday.  I found some bar-end turn signals and sort of pig-spotter type mirrors.  I need you to buy those, so I can see what they're like on a GS.  Ha hahahahahahaha!

I will buy a monster seat cowl before I attempt to make one.  It will fit much better and look much better than what I could make.

I'd love to go on a ride sometime!  Where do you live?

Thanks!  I will keep this thread updated as I make further progress.

My starter should be here tomorrow so hopefully I'll have it running this weekend.  If I do I'll try to post a video of how it sounds with the monster exhaust.
