I've got a dirtbike to trade....

It would probably be a huge pain to get the title issue worked out though....

anything that has "title issues" is a cause for concern in my book. not saying don't do it, just cover your ass and proceed with extra caution.

+1, who wants to buy a bike you have to swap a good frame for a good frame to ride.  It is priced like a parts bike but would make damn sure if you want to get it that the police reiterate the fact to you that it isn't stolen.

I once went through this with an old scooter. I bought the bike without a title and was able to get the DMV to issue a new ownership by:

• 1) Proving that I made all reasonable attempts to contact the previous owner (i.e. telephone calls and registered mail at last known address)
• 2) Because #1 failed, paying a lawyer to notarize a statement where I swore that I purchased the bike in good faith and that to the best of my knowledge it was not stolen

The process turned out to be a hassle and was more trouble than it was worth. It took up several hours of my time. And, between the registered mail and the lawyer fees, ended up costing about $200. I guess it might be worthwhile for a more valuable vehicle? 


p.s. This took place in Canada - the process may be different in the USA

first year of FI, the PC's don't work right, parts are ungodly$$...........that said it would be a fun bike to step up to from a gs. I probably wouldn't give 2k for it though because of the title issues.

That seems like quite a hassle, I'm assuming it would probably be more of a process here in the states.

The only way I'm considering going through with this, is if he agrees to a straight up trade for my dirtbike. I've got enough financial concerns as it is being a jobless college student....

1)  End up with a title with a lien for up to the original purchase price (whatever the O.O. might owe.)

2)  Get a nice letter from the servicing company requesting payment in full or:

3)  Be charged with receiving stolen property and

4)  Pay off the loan in full or they take the bike from you with no compensation.

That's some harsh reality there! Better to find out from you guys than when it actually happens. Probably explains why the guy didn't try to get it titled...

on the flip side.. the current owner could just be a dumbass and not really try to solve the title prob 

It'd be worth trying to check every angle before you bought/traded for it, IMO.

In Canada you can grab the VIN and look it up in a insurance database of sorts to check for liens.  You can also contact the police to check if it's stolen.

Totally Thinking outside the box here (aka please excuse these questions if they're retarded)....
What about getting it marked as 'salvage'?  does that give you any leeway (sp??) with the title issue?
Can you get a local bike shop to remove the frame markings paint it and say its custom??  Apply for a new title?

Some ideas for thought. I'm a tad confused by all the BMV madness that goes on, so I'll need to do a little research. I just asked him to send me the VIN, I'm going to run that through the BMV to check for liens. I also emailed the BMV and asked what my options were for getting it titled/registered.

If anyone has opinions on the suggestions made by Louie, feel free to throw 'em out there.

I know I should probably just walk away, but it's so tempting. As long as there are no legal issues or liens I'm willing to go through the hassle of getting it titled if I can.
