Has anyone refinished the paint finish on the engine casings? If yes what paint did you use? and where did you get it from, mines an 2003 model and has the grey couloured casings which I would like to bring back to showroom standard over the winter

Thanks Bill

PS I'm in NE England

I used duplicolor engine paint on my 95.  They also have an aluminum color paint that I used on my frame.  It might be a close match to the stock color.

Have you been running the bike after painting it? I know the GS gets very hot, even for an engine, because it is air cooled and I'm wondering if the engine paint could handle that kind of temperature...

cosmiccharlie

I haven't driven it yet, but I have had it running quite a few times and paint is still intact.  I am sure the paint on the cylinders will burn off, but I don't know of any paint that wouldn't.

I have the black engine and used black barbecue paint, which I have run after painting, and it's fine (even on the exhaust, which I also painted). More colors are available in "exhaust header paint" for cars, at least on this side of the pond. If I completely redo it I think I'll paint the engine red with header paint and sand back the edges of the fins to bare aluminum.

I've been thinking of doing this to the fins too.  Has anyone on the forum ground off the paint on the fin edges? Any problems with the powdercoat or paint or whatever is on there from the factory chipping off?

Pics if you can!

Thanks!

You have, we all have, its just a giant jigsaw puzzle the trick is to label things up as you take them apart, and keep all the nuts and bolts in a  secure container so you dont lose them. Its so satisfying when you finish rebuilding a bike and take it out to show it off you really need to give it a go

Yeah, I don' t know why they changed the engine color to silver... My engine is dirty looking enough and it is black. There is so much crud on it all the time, I can't imagine trying to keep it clean and shiny...

Y not, it is easier than you think!!!
A crash is the result of the rider's mistake, so don't blame the bike

A rider should be able to control the bike but not controlled by the bike, becuase on the track you don't want to DNF and on the road you don't want to lose you licence
