basically the same recommendations that came out of evan marshall and ed sanow's exhaustive forensic study of actual shootings that came from data and forensics gathered in the 80's and 90's. I disagree with his shotgun load recommmendations though. nothing smaller than 00 buck should be considered for a self defense round.
http://www.theboxotruth.com/docs/bot3.htm
And to stay away from slugs in 20ga was just asinine. I also like the reference to the mythical "knock down power" No such effect exists stopping ability of a round is based upon wound channel width and depth.

Basically use as much hand gun as you can handle.

Why didn't you just go the whole way and buy me a f@#king Kawasaki you bastards.

jserio

so BP do you feel they ammo type to be irrelevent then in chosing a self-defense weapon?

Use as much gun as you can handle. I am comfortable with and confident in my ability to handle the recoil generated by 200gr .45acp loads at +p pressures, I have shot alot of it over the years. Ammunition caliber selection is important but if you can't handle a .45 you should look to the .40 or 9mm loads less recoil associated with them. One of the discoveries has been that bullet expansion can't be depended on when shooting an assailant dressed for winter time. The cavity can become fouled leading to less than optimal performance. Expansion begins too early and slows the round resulting in not enough penetration or the tip becomes fouled and the bullet does not expand.

As far as self defense loads it must feed and eject reliably in the weapon, should definately be hollowpoint and should certainly be max pressure +p loads. I prefer federal's hydra shok, in any caliber you pick it is consistent and reliable.

Shotguns slugs are best followed by 00 or o buck or in the case of the 20ga the largest shot available is #3 buck.

Interesting statistic a center mass hit through the heart contrary to popular belief does not kill instantly, at a range of 7 yards a man with a knife can still reach and stab you. This has been documented in several police shootings, I think we had a trooper here in oklahoma that was killed or seriously wounded in just such a situation here in oklahoma. Bad guys don't just fall down even when shot through the heart with a .45.

There is no safe round for usage in the home, any round that is designed not to penetrate interior walls is a poor performer on bad guys. Frangible safety slugs are a prime example. They expend their energy way to early on impact and do not reach a depth sufficient to damage vital organs to the point where rapid incapacitation occurs. The FBI standard testing protocol requires a minimum 12" penetration in ballistic gel media, which is roughly equivalent to 24" of water.

Yes I consider ammuntition important bigger heavier bullets let in more cold dead air. But shot placement trumps magic bullets, so whatever you pick you need to become proficiant with and if you can't handle the recoil for quick accurate follow up shots it's worthless to you.

As of this point in time I have probably spent close to $20,000 on ammo in my lifetime. Not nearly enough practice if you ask me.

I just added another link in my stopping arsenal.  I traded my old MacBook for an almost new RIA 1911 with some extras.  It's a nice little weapon and hopefully the guy at the shop that did the transfer is right and the local range is open on turkey day (they usually waive range fee for a donation to charity is what he said)

Good choice terry, RIA is a great base model .45, Like most mi-specs it'll probaly take 300 to 700 rounds of full house factory loaded fmj ball to get it broke in. Don't even mess with trying HP ammo till you get 500 rounds down range. Wifes springer wouldn't even feed more than 2 in a row with HP at the 100rd mark now at the 300rd mark as long as she doesn't limp wrist it it'll feed. So we're still sending ball ammo sown range with it. Once you get it broke in you'll go broke checking defensive loads for reliability at $1.00 a round. You get what you pay for with .45 mags, my wilsons combat 8rd SS haven't let me down yet.

Once you get bitten by the .45 bug it's like a drug :thumb:

One mag that came with it is the cheap ass novak that comes with em new, 2 are KimPro and the other is a Wilson Combat.  Just looking at em and feeling em you can tell the difference in quality between em.  I've taken it apart a full half dozen times just to get used to the motions in field stripping.  I can't wait to heat some brass up.

yamahonkawazuki

post some damned pics of it now. im wanting that old colt that wilson has, terry you know which one im talkin about ( that 45 of his)

You don't actually need to have the transfer done here, I just kinda insisted  to cover everyone's ass legally.

Yeah there is no need to transfer in my state but should something come up, like the gun you just got from a friend was used in a crime previously then you have paperwork showing exactly how long you have had the firearm so i agree with SPC, it's a good idea to cover everyones ass's
