They have gun control in Cuba. They have universal health care in Cuba. So why do they want to come here? -Paul Harvey Quote

Yep.

Read what I wrote in another thread.  Once they get our farms, we're done.

Real estate isn't a problem.  Arabic guys have been doing that for the longest time.  Buying up land in cities, turning then into condos, then letting them go to crap.  It's going on right down the street from me, as we speak.
They're not after homes and little sandwich shops.  They're after peach orchards and soybean fields.  Feed their growing population without paying so much overhead.  Farmers will take the buyout without thinking twice.
"Gee, Martha... should I keep paying this failing bank for the new tractor, or take a fat check from that nice Asian guy?"

The Buddha

They can buy all they want ... I dont see how that is bad at all ... not like they can move the land to china ...
They cannot just produce and take the food back to china, they produce it here, it becomes like it was made by an american business. We get a food shortage, we can tax them for export just for taking it to china. In small amounts it works just fine, our farms are sitting idle and they are overflowing with cash ... try turning californa into a chineese farm state and its a whole different story. That was one of the huge things that NAFTA did. it cut down the tarriffs mexico could hit us with for exported produce. Then we dumped millions of tonnes of government subsidized corn into their market. They thought they were letting the barriers down for being an industrial producer of machinery for US ... and while they did for a short period of time ... they eventually got socked when we took our marbles and went to china.
Anyway, china can buy farms, that doesn't mean they get to take all the food they make on it and cause a famine here. China was better off buyign food on the open market. In a way the US govt is great at bait and switching. enough of them get bought by china, we'll drop farm subsidies. Enough of the food gets exported, we'll introduce export tarriffs. Enough of anything and we'll find a way to shaft them.
Remember when Japaneese were buyign everythign in the US ... well, japan is old news, china is the new japan. remember - deadbeat is the new middle class.

I don't know, Buddha.  I see what you're saying.
I'm just looking at the NAFTA thing working that way for us, in a way.  I agree with what you mean about produce tariffs and all.  I see a possibility of us becoming the new Mexico, using produce exports instead of machinery (in that case), with China and India eventually dropping us off by the wayside like heavy baggage.  It was explained to me about two years ago by an economics professor.  China is already gregarious by themselves, they just don't capitalize on it as well as we do.  Seeing that we've given up so much of our economy to outside resources, and that we're falling back more and more on our farmland... it's possible that China will initially depend on us for produce (etc) but quickly outstep our capabilities once they make use of their industrious population to their fullest extent (using modern equipment, produced in their own country).

I don't know.  I've heard rumors that it's already been happening anyway.

And yes, we're great at bait and switch, aren't we?!  I'm not big on international finance, but from my perspective those kind of tactics seem to be keeping us afloat.
I'd sure love to sit in a few of those meetings...
