The fuel tank must be stored "as installed" on the bike.  The cap has a vent in it, which  usually seals with a little loose ball bearing when the tank is out of vertical.  However, the key slot is a different story!  Mine leaks like a sieve.

So yes, it is "normal".   :)
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

Think that'll mess with buhda derustonizing my tank? Pm'd him but i think he's offline.

Why would that cause a problem?

loki7714

Idk from what i understand of the process cleans out rust first then he puts in some sealing stuff to keep from rusting and then spins it all day?
Wouldn't the stuff leak out of the top?

You take the filler assembly and petcock out before you treat the tank.

Fuel cap is part thats leaking though? Would like to fix this anyway because cap always reaks of gas and it's annoying.

dude your fuel cap is VENTED.  If you keep it from "leaking" your engine won't get any fuel and when it gets hot out your bike will likely explode into itty bitty pieces.

Your bike is going to smell like gas.  That's just part of having a motor vehicle.

My car never smelled like gas {before i killed it :) } maybe i'll vent it away from my face with another tube or something anything to get it away from my face (really sensitve nose)

You never drive your car with your head 12 inches from the filler.

loki7714

Can't say i've done that. Also when your car is making a funny noise try and focus less on the noise and more on the heat gauge, how i blew up my mazda protege less than a half mile from home  >:(

Hi Loki,

No, it won't interfere with the Buddha's work.  Yeah, most bikes smell like gas, especially in the hot summer sun!  You'll only notice it in a confined garage or every so often at a stop light in the heat.

However...  Realize that most motorcycle gas caps are not waterproof for the very same reason you have a leak.  Storing your bike outside without a cover will quickly fill the tank with enough water to cause trouble, especially if the little drain tube that drains water from the filler cap recess plugs up!

On the road, I carry a little 6" round piece of magnetic sign material.  It is the same stuff realtors and what not use to stick temporary signs on their cars.  I just slap that over the gas cap to keep the water out.  It works well and takes up no room beside the $0.15 octagon box cover I use to avoid kickstand sinkage on soft asphalt.   :)

^The magnetic sign stuff is a great idea...I use it for a lot of things.  If you can't find any head up to your local Century 21 office and peel one off the first car in the lot.

I didn't hear that.   :D

A bad leak will usually result in the coating stuff get on your paint. Then I wipe it off before it dries, it will be OK, but if it dries it may be there for good.
Anyway, that is the worst ... and no it does vent via the tank but its not supposed to leak via there. Not smell either ... if it gets liquid gas in there, it will not vent right. You need to clean the cap, and make the vent clean and not let it get clogged.
Cool.

My uncles does bodywork and was planning on getting tank repainted anyway. Where'd you say it's supposed to vent from?
