Gentlemen, I've found plenty of info (searching) about 04+ petcocks, and 89-2000 petcocks, but my 2002 seems to be the black sheep of our little GS family.

When removing the frame mounted petcock do i have to turn off the Tank mounted petcock to stop the fuel flow?

I'm thinking my petcock is similar to the one in this thread http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=37366.0 by the looks of it. Yes?

Give an 02 brotha some guidance.

Yes, I think the petcock system never changed. I'd assume that you have to turn the tank mounted petcock off before removing the frame mounted petcock. It make sense too, you need to stop gas coming out of the tank if you want to take off the frame mounted petcock because otherwise all the gas in the tank would have nothing stopping it from running out onto the bike...

You have to turn off the tank mounted shutoff on all years  89-present to remove gas hoses from the tank shutoff or from the frame petcock.  Your 02 frame mounted petcock is a different one from the 05 petcock shown in your link.  There are three different ones used over the years:
