hello. I bought my self a Suzuki GS500 brand new from the dealership in 2008. I know the manual says to change the oil at 500 miles (and I did), but I thought i read somewhere that you are also suppose to change it at 1000 miles. Now i cant seem to find where i read that lol. I am currently at about 975 miles so im getting closer to 1000. Anyone know if im suppose to change it at the 1000 mile mark or is it more like 1500?

The wiki doesn't say anything about that:

A quick look at the service manual says the next thing you care about is at about 2k mi when you clean/replace the air filter (assuming you're cleaning the chain regularly)
'04 F to an E to a wreck to a Wee Strom?
HEL stainless brake lines
15W fork oil
Kat 600 Rear shock
K&N drop in and Buddha jets
It wants me to go brokedie.

The second link fred posted shows the service intervals starting from 0 miles. According to Suzuki, you need to change the oil and oil filter at the following:
600 mi, 4000 mi, 7500 mi, and so on.

There is no reference to a change at 1000 miles.

Hope this helps! Enjoy the new ride!

In metric countries the 500 miles is done at 1000 km, possibly that's what you've read? 2nd change is 4000 miles or 6000 km.

Whenever I get a new bike I change the oil and filter at 100 miles then drain and fill at 200 miles then I follow the recommended steps. The first oil change is important you'll see bits of metal in the filter and in the oil. I just don't feel comfortable knowing there's bit's of metal floating around in my oil so I change the oil a little more than normal when new.
