What do you find to be the best method of push-starting your GS? Whats your secret? I had a real itch of a time getting my bike on the centerstand until I looked up a how-to video on YouTube and realized I never rocked the bike side to side in order to get both centerstand feat on the ground. Do that and the rest is easy. So how should one go about starting his/her bike if they find themselves without any charge? Please include the specifics like gear selection, choke and throttle position, or whatever you would include in your own How-to video. Thanks a lot in advance.  :thumb:

Well, at work I just call security oh wait that's me! But, we got jump packs and that works well. Also, you can jump the bike from a vehicle by just hooking up to the vehicle but DON'T start the vehcile wil fry your bike.

Also, if you have the strength push the bike at a good rate pop it into second and you can go. Happened one cold night to me a nice guy got behind and pushed the bike worked like ac charm.

You mean push start? Jump starting is just a matter of hooking up a car battery or other 12V power source to your battery and then starting up the bike. You shouldn't even have to start the car to make it work...

If you want to push start your bike, put it in neutral, push as fast as you can, pull in the clutch, shift to second gear and drop the clutch. The bike will (hopefully) start up and buck a bit. The trick is to not drop the bike or stall it. If you stall it, you have to start over. Another thing to be aware of is slippery ground. You need as much friction as possible to grab the back tire and get the engine turning over. I recently totally forgot about traction while trying to push start my bike, rolled it down my driveway, then popped the clutch as I hit the sidewalk. The sidewalk was smooth concrete and I just skidded right over it down onto the flat road. I then had to push start on a flat surface, which is way more work than doing it downhill. You can also have a friend help you. Just tell your friend to push with the grab rail and make sure you warn him when you're going to drop the clutch so he can let go! As far as choke setting, use whatever your bike would use to start normally. I can't tell you exactly what to use: I have two GSs, one will start right up with no choke and the other requires about half choke to start at the same temperature.

ha i've been practicing this for the past few days since my battery has been going to crap on me. I still havent gotten the technique down to good but yeah pretty much what the first guy said. put the bike in the on position, put it in second, hold the clutch get up to about 10mph and then release the clutch and bounce on the seat and its suppose to start up.

i have better luck just jumping it from a car (JUST MAKE SURE THE CAR IS NOT ON AT ALL, i'm told that it does bad things), always starts right up for me.

Or even easier: use a battery tender and the bike will start on it's own power. But then, I'm lazy like that.

or theres alway replacing the battery you know always an option.

 I put it in 2nd,

set kill switch to ON,

turn the key to ON,

Turn the Choke ON,

Set fuel to ON or PRI,

Pull in the clutch and push like hell unless you are lucky like me and live in the Mountains =)
then head to the closest hill...  :thumb: Jump on, Pop the clutch out and hope it starts... Pull clutch back in, sit on the side of the road and let it warm up a bit.

If your battery is flat out DEAD! Dont even waste your time pushing it... its prob. not gonna start.... Seek out some jumper cables  :thumb:

Try it on a hill in a 5 speed car 1st if you have one.... Shut off the car, clutch in, turn the key back to ON, Match your speed to your gear and pull the clutch. If you do it smooth you wont even notice the car was off  :thumb:

I got REALLY good at that when I had a Fiero that would suddenly stall while driving at like 35-45...intermitently...  I got so used to just jump starting it right back up that It was seccond nature  :D
