I've got an LCD monitor -- white and black use the same electricity.  The back light never changes...

So I'm gonna call BS on that one -- even though I'm a greenie .

Now your link works, but it seems to support my statement.

Actually both links support my statement b/c your link says even though it's minimal there is power saved when used on LCD screens and it could save 750 megawatt-hours a year.

"Even if the energy savings are small, they are representative of the need for each of us to start taking small steps to save energy," Blackle's Dr. Heap (who holds a doctorate in exercise physiology) told me in an email. "My hope is that by setting Blackle as their home page people will be reminded of this need to save energy each time they go online." Similar wording appears on Blackle's "about" page.

The changes were so slight as to be within the margin of error for the power meter. Tweaking brightness and contrast and settings had a bigger effect. The bulkier CRT screen did see savings with Blackle of between 5% and 20%. Mr. Korn emphasized that this was a quick test, not a rigorous study.

And I'll certainly agree with the need to be reminded every day!

I must turn off ten lights a day at school.  College kids....

Blackle is a good concept however just shutting your computer down when not in use is the best thing you can do.  I did a little study of my own and i saved 70 bucks on my power bill over a month by just shutting it down when i went to bed.

I do the same thing where i work  , except its lights, projectors, tv's ... basically anything that can be turned on and then walked away from when the douches are done with whatever. 

I walk around my house all day shutting doors to outside and turning off tvs and lights off.

$70 / $0.11/kWh = 636 kWh per month

636kWh / 30days = 21.2 kWh per day

21.2 kWh per day / 12 hours of non-operation = 1.77 kilowatts.

I hope to hell your computer doesn't take 1.77 kW to run!

Now, if your power costs double what mine does and you only run your computer 4 hours a day now, I could see it....

Wow, my power bill is only $55 a month! But, usually only my laptop, tv, living room light, and fridge are on. oh yeah heater.
Well, it has never been above 55 usualy about 43-47

I did this recently and i am pretty sure our power is around .11/kWh.  However it is a gaming computer running multiple video cards.  It typically runs from 4 to 11 mon-fri and all the time on the weekends cause i am lazy and on and off it all the time lol.  weekends is when i let my little beasty scan itself to death 

Cough Cough, i might have more than one computer as well, actually i have three i forgot to say that, however the gaming rig uses at least double the power of the other two.

I'm not sure of the significance, but the 500-700 watts (assuming a large monitor) used by the high power rig puts out quite a bit of heat.  Which requires some energy expenditure to cool.
