What engine internals often have problems with GS's?   I have a spare alternator, total clutch, starter motor, etc. I want to know what I am reasonably safe selling and what I should try to hold on to just in case I run into issues with my new engine. Any help would be great. Thanks

How old is the engine?  How many miles?

Frankly, the ENGINE on these things is so-o-o-o-lid.  You want a set of valve shims, some plugs, and maaaaybe a valve cover gasket and some o-rings.  Most bike engines are pretty solid if you treat them well, actually.  Frankly, I'd recommend spare brake lines, and choke and throttle cables over alternators and clutches and starters.  If your bike is fairly new I'd sell all those things.  IMHO

I'm pretty sure my GS with 87,000 miles hasn't ever had any of those things replaced... If you take care of the engine, there is very little that will break...

excellent. the engine it came out of had 12.5k on it.

I've never replaced any of those items on either of my GSs.  Put 80k miles on the 97 and then son JP ran it up to 88k miles and put in low milage used engine due to high oil consumption for freeway commuting.  Have about 67k miles on the 02 GS now.
407,400 miles in 30 years for 13,580 miles/year average.  Started riding 7/21/84 and hung up helmet 8/31/14.
