After having a VERY stuck bucket, pulling the head, and replacing everything, I'm having trouble getting the ol' girl to fire up.

I replaced the cams exactly as they came out (I think) marks lined up, 18 pins apart.

I've got compression - finger to hole test
I've got spark - Note to self, be SURE not to touch the metal part next time
I've got fuel flowing from the tank, petcock, up to the carbs
I've got air (not even sure how to mess that one up)

Now here's where i might have gone wrong: Instead of removing the cam chain tensioner, i loosened it enough until it Stuck Slackened, figuring i could just replace everything exactly how it came out.

I've even tried starter fluid in the spark plug holes, with still the same effect, nothing. Thus, a timing issue? Could i maybe have not 'pulled' timing chain tight enough and moved EVERYTHING 1 pin back? or 1 pin foward?

I've searched and searched, now im Posting for some help

Do you hear it try to fire up? Does the starter turn the engine over and it just doesn't catch?

dgyver

Probably rotated the crank.

Verify...
the RT mark on the signal generator rotor is at the left signal pickup
the EX cam #1 mark is horizontal with the head
18 pins #2 to #3 marks (1st pin on #2 mark & 18th on #3 mark)
Both notches on the right side of the cams will face each other
Common sense in not very common.

yea everything seems to be spinning and sparking, but not catching. Even with starter fluid.

I'll recheck the R-T and 18 pin thing.

Only difference between now and when she was apart are a few new shims. Those couldn't throw anything off too badly tho

Yup, I was half a pin off on both cam sprockets. Lesson to be learned here: Always mark the cam chain as mentioned in the haynes manual

lopee

The cam chain tensioner should be put back on so the screw is tight and the coil spring compressed, and once installed, pop the tensioner in place by twisting the screw, check cam alignment before installing cover over tensioner screw and valve cover. same you some time, maybe manually rotate the crank through a full cycle, i think thats 2 full turns.
