I'm not a strong swimmer...

Not that it really matters.  Do y'all even have water in Arid-friggin-zona?  :cookoo:

The salt river, lake havasu , a few others, tubing the salt river is fun take beer with, tie it on rope/twine, and let it in to the water to keep cold. and to keep authorities unaware too 8)

I made the mistake of the salt river tubing tour right after a big thaw in the mountains and a torrential rain.  There were F*cking RAPIDS MAN.  I was sober and damn glad otherwise I would have not made it through.

Also, its so damn hot here in the summer almost EVERYONE has a pool.  You have to get into the ghetto or little mexico before the apartments can't afford pools.  Hell we have 2 in our complex!

Thanks,

Nick

You aren't allowed to have beer on the river tubing trips?  Man, your state sucks.

i lived in arizona for a bit when i was about 5 yrs old. Phoenix area. My grandfather still lives in Arizona, Peoria I believe.  been begging me to bring the family down to see  him. with a wife and 3 kids, it would be a hell of a trip. and expensive. so it's on hold at the moment.
finally a homeowner!

Everyone has pretty much summed it up.  Good Shoes, warm ups . . .  however, for those who have knee and foot problems but want the cardio without the impact stress there is a water jacket available that holds you upright in the water and you can run with the water as the resistant.  Much more gentle and yet gets the blood and respiratory where you need it.  And, just because your in the water and don't feel the heat or the sweating you are producing both.  So continue to drink lots of water.  Remember the saying "Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink and you remember to hydrate.

I run also.  Mostly I love it, once in a while I really don't but it works.

Murf,

Your allowed to have beer, its just they watch closely and if they feel your out of hand they snatch you up instantly.  They arrested someone for giving the sheriff the finger after their air boat (boat with a big ass fan on the back to propel it) sprayed them with water!

This was also 2 weeks after someone drowned in the river so that might have made them more cautious.  I also didn't find that out till after I took my fiance!

I used to run... can't anymore.  Seems my youthful military punishment of jogging with a loaded ruck, coms unit, C9 with 5-6 bandaleers has come back to provide me with degenerative arthritis with a miniscule tear in my knee.  So now I walk or most commonly ride a recumbant bike for my cardio.

I miss running....
Faster, Faster, Faster until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death.

crack pipe sounds like track bike for a reason...

I just wish I was better at it.  I've always been told that the more you do it the easier it gets but I have always strugled at longer distances.  And longer distances to me are 1mile plus!  The furthest I've EVER ran at once was 1.7 miles and I was DEAD at the end, and could barely breath!  Might have something to do with 10 years of smoking, but I quit 2 years ago so I'm hoping it'll improve now!

Yep.  Didn't get a dime for it, either.

Two words:  cherry juice.
No kidding, it beats Osteo-Biflex and tons of Motrin, hands down.  Saw a study conducted by Duke on a population of RA sufferers.  Seems like the anti-oxidant concentrations are massive.  Their test population switched from their prescription pain meds at the end of the study, voluntarily, and wouldn't switch back.
Just saying.
It helps me.  Not as much ratcheting or spikey feeling.

Won't do jack for the tear in your meniscus.  Stupid things with their inadequate blood flow.
Not sure how old you are, or how much experience you have with that condition.  But, in case you don't know:  be careful going up freaking stairs.  Especially if you're rushing, trying to take two at a time.
The stairs themselves are fine.  It's the twist at the top that'll get you.

Get mean, get big, get a gun..........then you don't need to run :thumb:

Juan1

I am/was a runner with a couple of half marathons and loads of 5K's under my belt.   I stopped 2 months ago since my knees were giving me trouble again.  Some folks have the joints for running, and some don't.

coolrunning.com is a great resource.  If you are running just to run, which is fine, just run on your own.  If you are serious about getting into good running shape and pushing yourself, sign up for a race and get on a running program.  After your first race, start setting time goals for future races.

Juan1 - have you tried glucosamine and chondroitin for that knee pain?  I just started with it becuse I read some things on-line saying it can really help with soft tissue in the knees.  Supposedly it can even help regrow cartilage.  I'm hoping it works because I love running - the pain is very minor right now but I have had knee surgery to remove cartilage and I'm a bit worried about it.

Well I'm up to 2.5 miles now, so its climbed but nowhere near where I would need to get for time.  My goal is to be able to run a 5k by the end of the summer.  Considering the longest I've ever ran before was 1.5 miles I'd say I'm well on my way!  Now just to build the speed!

utgunsliger - that's great progress.  Just keep putting the miles in and you will gradually increase your miles.  Some interval training (as others have mentioned: sprint for a while, jog for a while) will acclerate your prgress but it is tough training.

Actually the 2.5 was done on interval training, dead sprints, jog, and walk over a 22 minute time period.  I feel much better with that than straight jogging for 2.5 miles.

Did another 2.1 miles with the fiance last night.  I found a couch potato to 5k program that we are running so in 12 weeks I should be ready to run my first 5k!
