I have a 2001 GS500 and the speedometer and tach both work fine but the black enclosure that they sit in is cracked and broken. If possible I would like to replace just that so I can keep the original mileage for the bike etc.

I have one from a 95.  I think it is in pretty good shape.  I'll take a picture tonight and send it to you.

how is the newer assembly different from the old one?

my 92 had the silver trim piece, and the tach and speedo were individual pots that bolted into it.  is the newer one like that or is it all one assembly?
