Every time I turn around I read about someone snapping a bolt on these things.

Either we have some pretty heavy handed shade tree mechanics here, or they put these things together with pretzels. I hope it's the former, I'm getting a little paranoid about working on my bike. I even read one guy who said he used a torque wrench to specs. and still snapped something.

What bolt(s)? The only "common" ones are the oil filter cover bolts.

what is this thread about? Did you have a question? I'm not sure what "put together with pretzels" means, but if you're implying the studs are made of toasted bread and salt, you are mistaken. Anyway, assuming they haven't been abused, it's no issue at all.  :dunno_white:  Thread over?   .....

I'm guessing tha what he is asking are "we" the ones of have stripped or snapped a bolt or idiots. Or are the bolts not very good on our bikes. Which in both seem kinda derrogatoy. Anyone can strip the head of a bolt. I'm a girl and mangaed to do  it so I don't think it is our "muscles" that do it. But, it also doesn't mean our bikes are POS's either. Sometimes, that happens. I'm sure if we alll posted everytime we took a screw out correctly we couldn't see anyother posts LOL. So, if you take the success versus failure it will broaden the picture abit.

You hit the nail on the head Mary, but it wasn't really a serious thread and not meant to be derogatory. I'm just a little paranoid now about changing my oil filter for the first time-----I'll probably wind up not getting it tight enough & spring a leak.

If you don't want to over tighten them use a screw-driver-type nut driver, 8 ft pounds I think is all they need which is not hard to do at all and is about as much as you can put with a screwdriver.

Wow, I made sense today. I was right in mid-swing of my muscle relaxer and pain meds for my shoulder. Was looking back at and like damn my spelling and attitude where waaay off! My friend has a torque indicator or whatever they are called and I use that on the real important parts.

There is a definite set of screws that will strip. The ones one the front brake fluid reservoir. If I'm not mistaken they're made of tin plated peanut butter, or at least a metal of that consistency. I only replaced my fluid once and can see visible damage just from removing them.

yes, but it's CARAMELIZED tin plated peanut butter. For strength. It's also some Jap-spec type phillips head IIRC, and not a normal us phillips head type screw.

then there are the carb... float bodies' screws
oil filter cap studs
and lastly...
the dreaded cheese injected chain tension adjusters. these are blamed for everything from famine to unplanned pregnancy. if a torque wrench on the axle is just used..... it's like a condom.

(that was really close to a buddh-ism)

I just hand tighten the nuts for the oil filter cover, using a nutdriver handle on the socket.  never had a problem yet
