Hi guy, not really a GS topic as we have the filter cover, but some of you are riding other bikes as well or might know somebody.

Due to 3 recent cases of bikers having bad accidents (one fatal) after loosing their oil filter and subsequently loosing the rear wheel on their own oil, a member of the German SV riders forum tries to accumulate some data on this topic.
If you have lost your oil filter at any point (or know somebody who has), please email me (oilfilter (at) GS-500.info) the following:

Did it loosen or did you completely loose it?
Which bike?
Which filter (brand)?
Where was the filter bought?

I'll pass this info on without mentioning names.

If you are member of another forum, please pass the message on there as well.

Thanks

P.S.: If you/the dealer did not put the seal in properly and caused an oil leak, this is not relevant to this.

Something similar happened to guy I know from my bike club a few years ago. He had an SV ..or was it a TL???     hhmmmm  :icon_confused:.....anyway, the filter came loose or burst or something and he lost the oil.... I cant remember the exact circumstances but he didnt loose control and wasnt hurt.
I will forward this thread to him and ask him if he will tell you the story. I will also try and get your request included in the next club newsletter.... :thumb:

I have always thought it was a bad location for a filter, even if it doesnt become loose or burst its a vulnerable position. Even something like road debris being flung up could punture it.

Some bikes vibrate in such a way it tends to loosen specific parts.
Like this gs I am working on loosens the left exhaust collar and the exhaust foot peg bolt.
My 89 that I had for 10+ years, used to vibrate the tail section at idle to 2500. Past it it was the smoothest bike I have ridden in the GS genre.
Cool.

@sledge: The guy who posted it rides a SV, the guy who died was on a Honda F6 Valkyrie.
