make sure that when you go flying past him that you are doin this :nana:
going fast isnt the problem, its the crashing and burning that hurts

Reknelb

Claimed HP on the freewind is 47hp and weight is 355lbs. I wouldn't get those  :nana: out until you hit 80mph

Kerry

I have no experience with a Freewind, but my Dad's single-cylinder dual-sport Kawasaki KLR650 eats my GS500 for lunch.  The GS500 may have a higher top speed, but any shortish race would be long over before I could make up the initial "see you later" surge of the KLR.

i have a gs 500 and a freewind 650.The only area that gs outruns freewind is top speed.freewind tops at 170klm.The acceleration is better and if you want to stay close you must shift in redline. Both bikes are  stock.

oh...

A GS in a good state of tune and used in anger should be able to out run a 650 thumper.

Freewind 47 crank horsepower
GS500 51 crank horsepower

freewind 14.7 sec. 1/4 mile
gs500 ~14.0 sec. 1/4 mile

race him to 100 and you will win

Frost

wow...check this out
the GS500 is faster than a S2000
or even a Porsche Boxster S
or a Ferrari 348 GTS....
in a 1/4 mile race

And at 1/4 mile + 50 yards they all blow you into the ditch.   :o

650cc thumpers have lots of torque. Most of them are also very light in comparison to other streetbikes. So the first yards he will be faster but eventually you will catch up. Because of the torque and lightweight he will take off fast.

according to magazines:Freewind hoursepower crank 47, wheel 40,4.        GS 500 hoursepower crank 51, wheel 40,7.                 Dry weight: Freewind  162 kilos,  GS 167.I had a drag race between the two bikes with the help of a trusty friend and the GS beats the freewind after the 1/4 mile.We switced bikes and the results were the same.So if you want to race your friend  the distance must be long enough.

You should shift at 10.000 - 10500 rpm, to take off fast, rev the engine to 5000 and let out the clutch while giving even more throttle. Beware that the front can come up if you don't pay attention.

Be aware that you will take off and accelerate REALLY fast because after every shift you will fall back right in the powerband.  I ride a GS500E for 2,5 years now and when I do this, it still surprises me how fast it will get over 100 km/h.

GRU

when you guys are racing, when do you shift? since the GS makes most HP at about 9500 rpm then i think it would be the best to shift every gear at about 10 000 rpm?

Juanfer

Hummmm.... I was shifting at 7500...I though that was the max torque point..... :?  :?
