So I have recently noticing changes in my bike. First off, my bike is a 2007 Gs500F with 6xxx miles on it. Everything is stock but the windscreen and Air filter(has restrictor).

When I purchased the bike, it would start up without choke and warm up. Same temperature outside and it will idle for about 30 seconds and die. What do you think could be the issue??

joshr08

use a bit of choke for a min or so if needed gs is a cold blooded bike.  or your idle may need to be adjusted up a bit.  after the bike is fully warmed up check your idle 1200-1500 rpms

Yeah I do use a bit of choke. But when I first got the bike it was not needed. Now it is needed at every startup for about 2 minutes. Even if it's 80 degrees outside. My idle is at 1300 when the bike is warm.

wow, you mean the engineers that built the bike actually knew what they were doing and didn't just throw in extra un-needed crap?   :icon_mrgreen:

whoa, choke was not needed?! interesting. my startup routine always consisted of: bike on centerstand, check oil, turn on bike with choke, let it warm up (pending on temperature outside. lately 60-70 degrees, about 30-50 seconds).

If the only thing that is different is the need for choke, there's nothing wrong. Who knows why it changed, but it won't be a big deal. You've got next to no miles on the bike, so unless you've been abusing it, there should be nothing wrong with it...

It was just bothering me how I used to be able to start it without choke on a nice warm day, and now I need about 2 minutes of it.

I've got a 2007 also.  I've always needed some amount of choke for easy starting from a cold start, regardless of the ambient temp.  I'll keep adjusting it to keep RPM's reasonable until I can feel the oil cooler start to warm up.  I won't take off until then; I'm a bit conservative in that regard.

Cool, Silver???

And how are you getting so good gas mileage?? I get about 30-35mpg if I'm lucky...

I drive spirited, very spirited. Even spirited 2-up.

But it's weird I weigh 115 lbs.!!!

Reason for good mileage??  :dunno_white:

I weigh 225, and ride mostly freeway for my work commute (65 - 75 mph) and backroads (50 + what ever is prudent  - lots of limited sight distance, hidden drives... and deer (that'll make you pucker up the ol' sphincter)).

I'm not super -gressive... but not a dawdler, either.

I WANTED the black/silver.... but was a tad late... by a day!  The dealer had one of each... and when I pulled the trigger the next day... it was gone  So I settled for the blue/white.  I like the blue...

I originally wanted the blue and white one until the stealership had one in silver. It was on clearance too! It was a 2007 with about 100miles on it. MSRP was $5149 and I got it for $4300 OTD. ;)

Sounds like a good deal to me!  Mine was also on clearance, but not used.  It was $4900 out the door, the first new any-kind-of-motor-vehicle I've ever owned!  It'll be a year at the end of this month since I got her - I should have 13,000 miles by then.  One very good year, indeed!!!!

It was new just "test driven a lot".

Wow 13,000 miles!!! I have only 6,000!!! It was my first anything motorized, and first purchase serious purchase ever. I was 16 when I bought it though. 17 now. I need to look into why my mpg is so bad. I just changed the oil and spark plugs, did a valve clearance about 100 miles ago, and lubed chain/ tighten, cleaned air filter....I am using the new SHELL gas that has nitrogen in it..
idk!!!!!!!!

applecrew

Hmmmmmmmmm.... 17??? you lucky dog! I was 17 once... and so was my son!  I'll be honest... if I had a bike when I was 17... I'd probably have been a statistic somewhere. But I've also missed out on many years of a helluva lot of fun...  Be careful out there!

I would think that even driving in town, you should get better mileage.  I hope someone else chimes in... I know 2-stroke fuel systems better than 4-stroke (because I haven't had to deal with it yet... knock wood), so I won't be able to offer much help.  I would think that if you were running really rich... you'd be having other problems as well.

How do your spark plugs look? Are you leaking fuel anywhere?

Hey guys, I also got an '07 in blue and white.  Same thing, the stealer had one of each color, and I wanted the black/silver. I wait one day and only the blue/white is left.  After a little while, I find I am MUCH happier with blue/white personally lol.

My mpg seemed to be pretty bad at first too, but in reality I was not filling my gas tank all the way!   Now I fill it upright and give it a  bit of time to let air escape
'07 F model, stock except for aesthetics

joshr08

spirited riding or not if your only getting 30-35 mpg your doing something wrong like riding the brake all the time im getting over 50 mpg with 14/45 gears 160 rear tire im 250 plus the wife and thats 2 up riding.  you may ride spirited but your gs wont run that spirited no matter what your doing.
