Wanna paint my bike--suggestions, insults, hijacks??

So I wanna paint my bike this winter.  Here's the scoop. I have the 96 model in red with the cool silver/grey frame and rims with a black engine.  I like minimalist stuff so I was thinking maybe black (matte?) with a stripe that matched the frame on the front fender and body work maybe?

Any suggestions. BTW I'd do a photchop of it  if  I  knew D*** about working photshop.

going minimal could be cool in flat or satin black but....

SCREW THAT. Do a classic Suzuki racing scheme.

In the movie freaky friday there is a Ducati that has some cool flames over black.  Really nice :thumb: but a little much if your looking for something simple.  Take a look though just for kicks!

Jake,

I did my '91 up just before Xmas. While matt black is cool, you may wish to reconsider for pure safety-reasons. You don't want to make it any harder to see you! Also, matt is really hard to keep clean.

When I did mine, I headed down to the locak discount auto shop and bought a stack of spray-cans. You'll have to strip off the side-covers, tank and front mud-guard to completely avoid overspray and masking issues. For the best results, see if you can get an orbital-sander to grind down the paint and decals on the tank, then use some wet & dry paper to rough-up the side-covers. That'll help the paint adhere nicely. The plastics are easy to do once you've sanded them a little and come up well.

On the tank, invest in some spray-on-filler and give the tank a few coats of that - it'll fill in any scratches and imperfections. Once done, sand it down gently with some fine paper until it's SMOOOOTH before laying down your paint. i found that the best way to paint was to hang the parts from the shed-roof, that way you didn't have to worry about angles.

I still don't have any digital images of how mine turned out, but with some forethought and patience you can bring up a sexy finish.

Oh, and since it's so cold, try to get a heat-lamp to warm up the parts before spaying, and then to assist with the dry. You want to leave it all under the warmer for a few hours to cure - that gives you the best gloss finish.

If you've got any more questions feel free to email me privately...

If you want to take a minimalist theme with a dark gloss color, how about no decals or stripes at all, and use the chromed plastic "S" hood appliques from a Suzuki car?

How about Green and Yellow?

The bodywork in Green and the wheels Yellow!

Then you can place new decals on the gas tank  :dunno:

How about a Yellowseat also?

that's no joke.  we once painted my brother's pacer with massey-ferguson red from farm and fleet and leftover  centerline  yellow that my brother had from penndot.

Be sure to think it over good, Im going to be getting into painting one of these days, and just by doing a little looking around you would be amazed at some of the cool paints out there, and different combinations you can come up with.

i spent about 5 hours sanding my gastank because i wanted to sand it nicely and then make it smooth, then i sprayed primer and wet sanded with a 600 grit and again with primer....then i took my tank to my cousins garage and painted it....i left the tank in me middle of garage and hoped that he can see the tank in the middle of garage when he comes home....then i went inside his house to watch some TV and 2 min's later he comes through the door and tells me that he hit my tank and the paint is finished  :x

now i'm gonna buy one of those "mouse" things to sand everyting faster (insted of hands) and paint red, not black like i wanted before....

I hear you:

When I did mine we left it hanging overnight, but the wire broke and
dented the top. Wasted 2 hours with filler-putty fixing the dent...

GRU

damn man. that sucks....i'm just lucky mine doesn't have any dents, because i hate using body filler and hiting out dents

Competition orange - nobody has that. Use an "S" sticker instead of the regular logo on the tank.

Yep, it is. Orange and white. Very nice lookin'

Black pearl with blue metal flake, with a blue metal flake stripe going the length of the side panels, and maybe one or two on the tank, vis a vis a black '90 GS. White rims. Very classy.

Or black with red reflective stripes on the back. Red rims (and of course, I would put little 2" white reflective tape strips on the front rim so it kinda looks like white lettering as it goes round and round (actually that would look better on a white bike with black rims, but the white might subdue it)).

Yeah, but solid orange - one fat black stripe. Antibody's paint is killer, though.
If not orange, how 'bout Charcoal to match the wheels?

tkm, that is very funny! I would paint it yellow and black with Cat logos, though.

How about white with a cool retro 80's style stripe in blue, red, or orange? I just have a thing for white bikes. I saw a white Honda Superhawk (I think that's what it was), and it looked sweet.

I think it looks like $hit.

Oh wait, I havn't seen it yet... :thumb:
