Issues: (posted on SV board, no responses overnight, wtf. They suck. Anyway, please weigh in.)

1. SV sometimes won't start with kickstand down, regardless of whether it's in neutral or the clutch is engaged. Not a huge deal, I just have to sit on it and pop back the kickstand and it starts up.

2. Bike starts very briefly then dies. Further starts are progressively weaker and choked. Bike eventually starts after waiting a minute. I take a lot of short trips and maybe it gets drained by multiple starts. But then when I go to charge the battery, my trickle charger indicates it's full. It's a Yuasa sealed battery about a year old.

I am hoping it's just the battery fading out, and the charger is inaccurate in indicating it has a full charge. Hopefully not an alternator or other problem.

Ideas?

Have you checked the kickstand sensor?

Have the Gs500's always had the neutral switch for the sidestand?  Because mine seems to start right up every time with the sidestand down...

The sidestand issue isn't a big deal but it keeps dying right on startup. Thats not cool. Where is the neutral switch generally?


But I'm hoping it's the air filter. I noticed in a certain parking garage with poor ventilation it dies right on startup. Now it's anywhere. Also my mileage is way down (25ish) Filter is ordered and I'm going to check right now.

Those buggers had this insanely Idiotically stupidly horribly crappie green connector ... google green connector issue on the sv board ... the real SV ... the 1K, not the chick's SV 650 even though that's what you have ...

That board aint nothing but gays and chicks drooling over the gladius cos they like the name ...

You want a true trouble shoot - you have come to the right place, gstwin ... what we lack in power, we make up for in creappieness ... but the 1K board is cool too ...

2002 SV650.

Air filter element was a little gray but no real dust or clogging. Sh1t.

Battery was last replaced upon purchase March 2008, so maybe it's about time. The only thing is, the trickle charger always shows it's full. Maybe the charger is inaccurate or can't tell when the battery is fried? I had the feeling the SV did a better job recharging on short trips, and it never needed a charge-up before. Likewise, the headlight flickers or dims when the brakelight comes on, but not enough for concern.

Having enough cash and being too lazy to do real diagnostic work, I bought a new battery and it's charging now. Recession pricing went from $85 previous to $120 plus tax. $130 for a new Yuasa.

Hope to Allah it's not the starter motor or some sh1t that requires me to do any more labor.  :bs:

Sounds like you have some electrical fun going on.  Did you do the quick 'n easy Charging System Test?

Yeah, they have always had the neutral switch.  To start:  Run/Stop switch = On AND clutch = Pulled AND transmission = Neutral OR sidestand = Up AND start button = Pushed

After I fried one of the fuses in my cheapo multimeter (that doesn't work unless I press the cords into the multimeter connections) the voltage test turned out fine. Near as I could tell, the needle stayed solidly at about 13.5-14V at both 2500 and 5000 RPM.

This leads me to believe I may have just blown $130 on a new battery?

From your first post, sound like the side stand switch is going bad. Or at least there is a bad connection somewhere.

I am pretty sure I have an extra switch.

If you want to make me a deal on the battery, I need one for my SV.
Common sense in not very common.

Will keep you posted. However I paid $130 incl tax, and I think I can return it minus 20%.  :dunno_white:
