GS500 not the slowest bike on the road

Went for a ride with a buddy today.....he rides an 800 Volusia cruiser.   Man that thing is just molasses slow.   The little GS was reeling him in at will.   Of course the other day I got completely owned by a Yamaha Raider leaving an intersection.  Karma I guess.
Attack but have a back up plan

Hmmm, I was just thinking that last night when I completely OWNED a 2002 Mustang GT at the take off from a red light  :icon_twisted:. I know it was bad but he was egging me on and that irked me so I put him in his place.

I love my GS!!

Well even a lowly GS500 accelerates to 60 in about 4 seconds so no surprise you can smoke most cars heck a ninja 250 can get to 60 in 5 seconds. It's just funny that you'll even run into people in econo boxes that'll try to "race" any bikes next to them, I run into them all the time. I accelerate and blow past them off the line but I don't speed on side streets so eventually they come blasting past me speeding way later on down the line. I'm sure it feels like a victory to them  :icon_rolleyes:

haha, I was just about to start a thread about this.  I went for a ride this morning and pulled up to a light first in line before this long straight-a-way to a country road.  A new mustang pulled up in the lane next to me and starting revving his engine so I looked over and he kept doing it.  So when the light turned green I went WOT and smoked him.  I love doing that :D

I think the GS is more like 5.5 seconds to 60 mph.  Still quicker than most cars on the road.

No, it's not the slowest by any means, but I'd say it's pretty much in the middle of the pack.  Due to the GS's light weight, it's quicker than my XS 750 triple with 64 HP and as quick as my stock 2005 Neon with automatic transmission, but the Neon is significantly faster.  After about 80, the Neon would run away from the GS.  Few cruiser bikes can keep up with the GS at any speed.  Some cruisers are quite quick and fast, but they have huge engines, cost a fortune, and shake like a paint mixer.

I've been riding the Yamaha for the last few weeks while I sort out the problems it had when I bought it, and I rode the GS today.  The GS feels like a toy (in a good way) after riding that big touring bike for three weeks, let me tell you!  But I love the GS.  It does so many things well, it's relatively cheap and easy to fix, looks great, and gets about 20 mpg more than the Yamaha.  The Yamaha is only superior when it comes to ride quality and passenger carrying ability.  The XS rides like a limo and will accelerate two-up in top gear from 2,000 rpm.

Most cruisers are all about pose, not speed, I have lost count of the H-Ds I have blown into the weeds on my GS and my VTR250. Still feels good when you do it, though, especially on a 20 year old old bike that cost me 10% or less of the value of theirs.

Watch out for the Mustang drivers revving it up and encouraging you to race, some of them are under cover cops!!

Oh this dude could no way have been a cop and with the HO in the seat next to him and then there was the Boricua cd hanging on the rearview mirror. Besides I never got up to the speed "limit" which was 55 just enough to spank him hard then he turned into Wal-Mart! I think he was embarrased so he turned into wally world to save face.

Was still fun!

I just rode my GS to Seista Key from Arcadia, it's 51 miles of mostly stright county road. I finally opened it up and was very disapointed going there. I only got 85 mph going against a 15 to 20 mph wind. But coming back with the wind I got it over a buck and had throttle left on the same stretch, the lilbugger doesn't like the wind very much but it's a great bike. The more I read about the problems the only bike I would replace it with (BMW F800) the more I like the GS. It's the perfect mix of milage, sport and aglity.

I do miss my triple, except that the repair to ride ratio of a 30 year old bike just got me down. I was tempted to reclaim the bars off the triple to try and recreate the '77 XS750 (standard) ride position because I found it so darn comfortable. I do find it fun to shake my brother (Virago 1100) and my H-D riding friends off on the corners around town. No comparison accelerating on the highway though.

I think we all get that urge once in a while to race someone out of a light.  A Dodge dealership near my work has a beautiful new Challenger R/T on their lot.  Leaving work a few weeks ago there was a guy test driving the Challenger R/T that pushed my race button.  I had stopped to look at the car a few days earlier, it was really hot!  I thought he would take me but I was still game.  Surprisingly my old '89 GS inched ahead of him and he was really going for it.  I think I was as surprised as he was. Kind of funny when the $900 bike gives the $34,000 muscle car a run for its money.

Doesn't that just make you grin that much more! I luv my Flick!  :whisper: fairings are the best!

if it was a cop, he couldve slapped you with a ticket for "display of acceleration".  but congrats on smoking a stang!

oh, a week back i was at a red with a beamer, and he was reving it up. i kept silent, and waited for the light change. light turned green, and he accelerated and i let him get about 50 feet ahead of me. 5 seconds later, i got up to 120km/h (limit was 60km/h) and flew by him. it felt pretty nice.

A young motorcyclist who overestimates his abilities, boasts of his riding skills when in reality he has none.

Squid bikes are usually decorated with chrome and various anodized bits. Rear tyres are too wide for their own good, swingarm extended.

Really slow in the corners, and sudden bursts of acceleration when a straight appears. Squids wear no protection, deeming themselves invincible.

This fact compounds intself with the fact that they engage in 'extreem riding'--performing wheelies and stoppies in public areas.

Squids wreck a lot. Derived from 'squirly kid'

Yep  :tongue2:

J/K bro but don't ride too fast for you to not be able to deal with any probs that may and will arise.  :police:

SQUID acronym :
S- Speeding
Q- Quickly
U- Until
I-  I
D- Die

I've always heard that saying. Not to say I don't have my own quick wrist at times. I wear full gear and don't go more than 5-10 mph faster than the speed limit, but here in Charlotte you get passed @ 70 mph on 4 lane 45 mph posts. I haven't raced a car in about 5 yrs, but when i did i always won.

I did however take a trip to Wilksboro,NC  then to Lenoir, NC (US 268), AWESOME RIDE! On that trip I raced the 3 other bike i went with and won every time. I raced a 93' Yamaha XJ 600 (63 hp), a 2008 Kawasaki vulcan 900 cruiser w/ pipes (50 hp), 90' Suzuki VX800 (65 hp). And the winner is.................

              My 91' GS 500e (hp ?), 15 F sprocket, 42 R sprocket (it pulls the wheel up @ 4300 rpm's), Carbon TRS Yosh pipe, K&N Lunchbox,40 p/150 m/ 2 3/4 out, Ignition advancer, Decked and 3 angle valve cut on the head.

And not to say I do it all the time, but the speedo will still read 115 mph when I let her loose.
