i'm very close to buying a gs now, which will be my first bike. mom's freaking out obviously and called the insurance company and got a quote (i'm in VA btw). right now i drive a 1990 300zx n/a, and pay $100 per month. pretty high. i'm 19, i've had one small accident and no tickets, and male.

well, knowing all this, how ridiculous would you say $200 per month is? it sounds absolutely insane to me! is there even any possible way? that's what mom said it was though. there's a chance that she just lied so i wouldn't get one. i'm going to call somewhere else and get a quote though. which companies would you recommend?

btw, 300zx fs hit me up

qwertydude

With a car I pay nearly 200 a month, a bike even with full coverage is only about 125 for me. Right now with only liability my bike's insurance is about $25 a month. Los Angeles has among the highest insurance costs in the country so yours will be cheaper.

I pay about $35 a month with full coverage... I'm 23 and in upstate NY.

1. I pay $89 a year in Missouri--full coverage. I'm closer to 39 than 19 but have a clean driving record.

2. Seems like it's time for you to Sac up and stop relying on Mommy to do all the leg work. Call around and KNOW what insurance rates are for you in your area. 19 is old enough to start taking care of these things.

3. Yes, $200 is expensive. I'm positive that if you start looking around you'll find it cheaper. However, next time you see another 19 year old doing a wheelie down the interstate at 80 MPH on their 300 HP supercharged Ninja make sure you shake his (or her) hand and thank them for indirectly jacking up your insurance rate.

Quick edit...

4. I get to thank drunk Harley riders getting liquored up at Hooters and trying to ride home for keeping my insurance rates up.

thanks for all the replies guys.

xealotx: i know what you mean about doing this myself, but you do have to admit that group insurance rates can be better. apparantly not in this case. i'm in college, so she usually pays it.

anyway, i did do the gieco quote thing online and they gave me a number of $37 per month. that sounds awesome. so if she won't call the insurance company back and set the facts strait, i am sure that i'll just get my own policy through gieco. well, i'll check out a few others first. i'm not looking for good coverage at all. i just want to get the cheapest insurance possible.

any suggestions on who to possibly go with to reach that goal?

Does the insurance company that your family uses cover motorcycles? Mine does not in Missouri and I had to use Progressive even though my house and car are through a different company. For your age $37 doesn't sound bad. Try Progressive for a comparison since you can get a quote online. Have you taken a Motorcycle Safety Course? Along with some good info it may help lower your insurance as well.

Be safe.

I have Progressive insurance, they seem to be pretty popular.

Be careful what you wish for with insurance - you may wind up regretting getting the cheapest possible insurance on the market.

i just got a quote through progressive and they said around 230 per year. the quote through the families company was 200 per month. wow. i think mom was lying.

why might i regret getting the cheapest insurance out there? that's what i've always had with cars and it hasn't been a problem, and with such a cheap bike, i'm pretty ready to face the fact that if i mess it up, then i need to fix it.

Are you looking at new or used?  Makes a big difference.

the 230/yr sounds about right for just the cheapest liability you can get.  The 200/mo isn't that surprising if she priced comprehensive on a new bike and/or one with fairings.  Comprehensive for my 04 was gonna run almost what I payed for the bike each year.

If you get insurance with your family though you're probably going to want more than the minimum liability.  As you usually want liability greater than what they could get if they took all your monies.  The state minimum is probably more than all you're worth, but probably way less than what your family is worth.

Also, just be glad she is letting you get a bike at all if she's still paying for you.  My parent's position was "yeah you're welcome to get a bike when we're not paying for your medical insurance."

Specific coverage also makes a big difference. State to state varies widely. Go through each part of the policy and understand what it is and what it will (and won't) pay for.

For a used, inexpensive bike, it often doesn't take long for self insurance (aka paying your bank account, not the insurance company) to pay off on comp/collision (ie, not getting it - while accepting the fact that if your bike is stolen, or in an accident that is your fault, you will simply pay for that. In an accident that is another driver's fault, you will have to beat the money out of their insurance company.) Compare your payment per year to what THEY claim your bike is worth, minus any deductable. I did that math on my first car and have never had it since. Try to actually put the money away, and actually not spend it until you're replacing your bike - works better that way.

I dropped the extremely overpriced Massachusetts insurance on my bike by nearly half simply by deleting the "effectively useless" 5000 medical per passenger (for accidents that are your own fault - as usual, if caused by another, you/your medical insurance can beat the money out of their liability insurance) coverage that my idiot agent tacked on - I don't carry this on the truck (and I said - "same coverage as the truck"), I don't carry it on the bike. I have medical insurance, the only passenger I'm ever likely to carry has medical insurance, and $5000 is a useless drop in the bucket for medical costs.

For liability, you should carry more than the state minimums (I assume all states that make you have insurance at all have minimum liability limits, and all the states I've lived in set them 40 years or so behind the times in terms of medical costs that might be incurred). You may also want uninsured/underinsured coverage (which provides you with money if the idiot that plows into you is not insured, or has minimum insurance.) Liability is usually lower on a bike than on a car/truck - less mass, less ability to do damage to other people/cars/buildings. Uninsured coverage is usually higher, since you're more likely to be damaged when the idiot in a car or truck with no insurance plows into you.

You can't help being male; being 19 will eventually cure itself; try to avoid any more accidents, and also moving violations of any sort. Also, take the MSF - it may cut your insurance rates, and it will almost certainly cut your odds of needing to use your insurance.

i'll definitely have the msf. that's how i'm going to get my m endorsement on my license.

anyway, thanks for all the advise there. i have one point i'm confused on though. the numbers for the minimum liability looked pretty high, as far as what they covered, but i'm under the impression that i really couldn't do much damage on a motorcycle. i mean, i hit a car, and it covers up to 25k or something for damage to the car, and i don't really think i'd ever go fast enough to hurt somebody in the car. perhaps i could, but i'd probably be dead in that event. is there something wrong with this reasoning?

Toogoofy317

Well,

I have Progressive am 28 female. Have had one accident that was considered my fault and my last speeding ticket was four years ago. My insurance has medical, liability, and 3,000 for custom parts. It cost me $33 a month for an '04. In Florida you don't have to have it but since I'm still financing it I'm keeping it and if you don't have $25,000 in medical you must wear a helmet  :cookoo: rule. Always, wear your lid!

I think I read on a site not to long ago that a "squid" got their bike to 132 miles an hour T-boned a car and not only killed himself but the driver as well. Not saying you would do that but since you are still in school and parents are still "responsible" for you at the moment they could very well sue your family if you are on their policy esp if the bike is in the parents name! How high can doctor's bills be? I was in ICU for a week and the bill was $100,000 + . Ruined my life because this happened just after getting laid off of a job.

I believe I just read in Motorcyclist online that 85% of accident's require a hospital admit! I managed to drop my bike on my ankle at a red light and the cost was about $12,000 after the hospital ,rehab, and follow up appointments.

Try to balance price vs coverage and find a medium that you are willing to live with! We all make choices and they all have their consequences.

I have progressive. I'm a 26 year old male. I have liability and some medical insurance and that's it for about $140 for the first GS and $5 for the second for a year's coverage. I figure any kind of theft insurance on a GS is totally worthless. The difference in premium is so high that I could just buy a new GS after a couple of years. My first GS cost $1000 and the second was free, so I'm only averaging $500 per GS, so it really isn't worth insuring them against theft. I bet that, given what an insurance company is going to give you after deductible, any GS more than a year or two old isn't worth insuring against theft and if you're buying your first bike, I really hope it isn't new...

sappy13

I have minimum coverage on my 2006 gs500f through Progressive for USAA Members.  USAA does not offer motorcycle insurance so they go through progressive.  I just got my first bike 2 weeks ago and i am 22 years old.  My insurance is 244 a year, which i paid in full.  That comes down to 20.33 a month for coverage.  My driving history isnt that great either.  I have had 4 tickets(24 over, 18 over, following 2 close, too fast for conditions) in the last 12 months with 2 of those in the last 6.  Then i am pretty sure i have 2 other tickets from a year or 2 ago.

Toogoofy317

Next time you pay up I can almost gaurantee you your's will skyrocket. When I had the one at Fault my car insurance went from $87 to $128 a month when it was time to renew. How many points you got to you lose your license man that just ain't safe even if it is in a car. I'm sure the other males your age love paying higher insurance rates because of your driving style. I'm not saying just saying  :dunno_white: It will catch up to you!

I'm insured through geico and pay a little over 100 a year for liability in Texas. Oh, and I'm 28

thanks for all the responses guys.

i'm 19 so i'm thinking it's a better idea to use a plan that's separate from my families. just so if anything happens they aren't screwed.
