Hey all,
I recently bought a '94 GS500E and it needs a bit of work.

  1. Brakes. When my friend test rode the bike, he said the rear brake squeaks. I've examines the disk and I can feel it has two large bumps running all around and many other smaller grooves. Should I plan on getting a replacement disk?
  2. Another question about brakes. Will a gs500f rear disk fit on an old gs500e? And would HH up front and GG on the rear be alright for a beginner, or should I go GG all around?
  3. My front brake disk looks kind of thin, and has a bit of oxidization on it. Should I change it out? Here are some photos of it.

I can post more photos if required.
Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure about question 2 or 3, but the GS500 is notorious for a rear brake squeal that won't go away.  It doesnt mean anything is wrong per se.  Some people have posted methods of making it stop for a while, but it usually just comes back.  Just ignore it i say.  :D

Cool, thanks.
But what about the two mountains on my disk?

I believe the rear disc should be the same for all models but you can check bike bandit and see if the part numbers are the same.

If the front brake doesn't look safe to you i would just change it.  That is where most of your braking is and i wouldn't risk having it fail.

Some people here run the HH up front and i think leave the rear stock but whatever setup you have just test it in a parking lot or an empty road to get a feel for how much braking power it has.  That way when you have to actually use it on the road you will know how much force to apply.  It should be fine to run HH pads up front and GG in the rear but just familiarize yourself with how hard to squeeze the brakes to stop safely.

Yep, front and rear are the same for my GS and all the newer ones. Very convenient.

I guess I'll just change the front out then. It looks like it hasn't been changed for a while.
I'll test out the rear brakes today.

I also posted pictures of the rear rotor. Can't really see the bumps on it but maybe someone could tell me whether or not I should change it for another.
Thanks for your help.

Ignore the mountains too.
Front brakes are pretty thin ... but get them much past 4mm and they are toast.
Cool.
