dremel saw blades are dangerous

So I got a wood cutting blade for my dremel in the mail today from jackstoolshed.com.

I put a blade in and tightened it down then revved the dremel up to full speed.

I guess it wasn't properly balanced because it immediately bent the shank albout 45 degrees from the centrifugal force and then it was really unbalanced.

In the process it sawed a nice cut down to the bone on my knuckle.

Hopefully the company I bought the chitty thing from will refund me.

the shaking was so severe that it bent something in my dermel and now it is out of balance so I may try to get them to cover that too.

ouch ! even if it were placed right next to the collet, i'd bet a vibration would be pretty bad at 5-10k rpm.

good thing you didn't loose an eye !

Dremel hits 28,800 in the old days.
I had a cordless - prolly still do but haven't used in years due to having a house since 96 - but it was my slow dremel - aka - it had a slow setting - yes a paltry 15,000 rpm. The second one was 30,000.
In the old days the dremel's were better too. I am using my 15 yr old crastfman, but have busted the 3 year old dremel.
Cool.

ive Got a flex shaft on my jewelry bench made by foredom. wiht a pedal speed lever which goes from 400-30k, same wiht an identical unit at my home. and balace is key. sometimes hole in saw, is too big for shaft etc ive actually made a spacer out of superglue. mic'ed the gap so all sides were equal, and vibes were a minimum. 15 mins worth of work;. but at 30k when shaZam! breaks it can and often does get messy http://cgi.ebay.com/rle-FOREDOM-TX-300-1-3-HP-w-30-HANDPIECE-NEW_W0QQitemZ400055786672QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item5d252edcb0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1326%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 similar to this one but higher top rpm tho

btw where you attached the blade , is thre a raised notch type thing that barely fils the center hole in the blade? ive got a few of those for my foredom, if i can find a spare, ill send it to you. it eliminates off balanced tools/blades/ other attachments

here is the one i bought http://www.jackstoolshed.com/index/page/product/product_id/2161/product_name/High-Speed+Steel+Saw+Blade+Set+for+Rotary+Tools+-+1%22+to+2%22+Diameter+-+18%22+Shank+Mandrels

I don't know if you can tell from that picture.

It does have a raised part in the center that fits the hole in the center of the blade.

Thanks for the offer, if you find a spare I'll give it a try

Pretty!

Gonna get a stitch (3, maybe 4)?  Or are you gonna do the tough-guy thing?

As far as the Dremel:
IIRC, there's a support bearing around the output shaft (before the collet), inside the housing.  The modern bearings are synthetic and easily worn out of spec.  Most folks use a single piece of electrical tape between the shaft and bearing, cut to size.  The bearings aren't replaceable (square overall dimensions, hole in the middle, two halves, black plastic, each glued into place).  Good luck!

Post pics with results!

tough guy thing of course  :D

I just super glued it closed, stitches hurt worse anyway because of all the scrubbing and poking.

Are the RPMS reccomended for that blade listed on its package? Most rotary cutting blades/bits I buy have a warning like... Do not use over 4,500 RPM

nope I checked, the only warning is not to use it with the wrong kind of power tool.

I swear I read something online that said 30k rpm but I can't find it now.  :dunno_white:
