Throttle Cable Issues

Well I finally installed my SM2 bars on my 94 GS.  I get everything put together and bolted up.  I start it up and everything seems okay so I take off down the drive way.  But when I get to the end and try to turn right onto the street the throttle revs up to 8K so I pull in the clutch and shut her down.  I try to run again with the handle bars straight and everything is normal.  While in neutral I turn the handle bars to the left and nothing but when I turn it to the right it revs really really high.  Can anyone tell me what is wrong and if I did anything to screw up the throttle?  Thanks in advance.

You will need to check the cable routing.  It's binding/pulling somewhere when you turn the bars.  Remove the tank and observe the throttle while turning the bars from lock to lock.

And, as you have probably already guessed:  When you have removed any cable on a bike, check for binding/pulling before riding it!

I do have another question.  On the throttle there are two settings to place the throttle cable.  Which one should I the cable attached to?  One is closer to the rider and the other one is closer to the front tire.

I had the same problem you did when I swapped to clipons under the triple.  It in made the throttle and choke cables way too long.  I don't know if your bars are low enough to be causing the same problem, but if they are it might help to reroute the cable differently than stock.

My throttle cable goes...in front of R fork tube....in front of steering head...and enters the triangle in frame on L side.
My choke cable goes...in front of L fork tube...in front of steering head...and enters the triangle in frame on R side.
Rerouting them different than stock (the longer way around) took care of all of my problems.

Also, if you hold the throttle tube so both holes are pointing up, the cable will go into the hole closer to the tire.

My 90 GS500E has spread itself across the nation.

Anyone else want to chime in on this problem?

Did you re-route the cables and are still having the problem? because that's definitely what the problem is. I had it happen when I switched bars before too. It happened to me when I switched from clipons to risers on another bike, because the cable was just pulling too tight, but I just changes my GS from risers to clipons, and without even having it together, I can definitely see some cables are going to need re-routed before I put the tank back on. Right now it has too many s-bends from the cable being too long, and being jammed up into the back of the headlight.

I can't remember what the bottom of part on the handlebar looks like for the cable, but all GSs only have one cable, so browse around the gallery until you find one with a good picture of it and you should be able to see where it goes. I'm not completely sure why some bikes have 2, but I believe when they do, one cable wraps around the throttle one way, and one wraps around the other way, so as long as the cable pulls tighter when you're twisting the throttle so the top rolls back towards you, you should be fine.

Well I re-routed the lines per ineedanap's comments.  It work but still rev'ed up just a little bit. I thightened the cable a bit more and it fixed it.  Thanks for all the comments.  I'm just really worried that the banjo bolt on the brake resiviour is touching the tach too much.  It's pretty much pushing up against the tach.  Should I be worried?
