installed pod k&n air filters need rejet help

my bike is a 2006 gs500f all stock except i put dual pod k&n air filters to replace stock airbox. Now my bike is running pretty bad and i have to rejet carbs. I bought a dynojet stage one jet kit but i was told now that i need a stage three. what can i do to make the kit i haave already bought work? p.s. i also bought DJ 142 main jets casue i know the biggest one in the kit is 132 and that is too small

return the dynojet stuff and buy buddha jets.  I'm sure buddha will respond one he reads this post with the solution.

Well ... DJ needle is more finicky to tune ... and - with stock needles my kit does work well. Nearly a throw it in and forget it type dealio.

But, the one and only 89-00 only DJ job I have mastered seems to like 135 mikuni mains and 1 hole blocked in the slides ... but please take that with a huge bag of salt ... its 1 bike, and I have not made it through 1 winter with it ... winter is where all the jetting needs to be done. Needle is an obstruction in the emulsion tube and the thinner the needle the smaller the main jet needs to be, mains are at the inlet end of the tube and I dont believe its a linear effect either, needle taper etc etc has a huge effect at where in the throttle range it acts which way.

The thing though is, I sold off the motor, which is now sitting in average's bike, and I am stuffing a GR motor in it ... so we may never know what it took to work perfect in winter. But I'll do DJ kit on the GS carbs on the GR motor ... for sure  :thumb:

If you keep the dynojet stuff...

(EDIT removed info that was for 89-00 instead of newer style carb.  Oops)   Don't forget to buy a larger pilot jet since it doesn't come with the DJ kit, but you'll need it.

I like my dynojet stage 3.  My jetting is perfect.  My bike starts easily, idles perfect, and pulls strongly all the way to redline.  It also gets 55mpg with a lunchbox and a slipon and crazy gearing.  The only change I've ever have to make is opening the mixture screws an extra 1/4 turn when the temps dip into the 40s.

I write that everytime I see dynojet in a post since everyone bags on them.   :D

i bought the 142 because i called dynojet  and they told me that with the K&N filters without the stock box, the largest main jet which is 132 was not big enough and that i would have to go with one between 140 and 144 so i went with the middle which was 142 but i guess my main question is that if i install the pilot that came with the kit which is 18 and keep the mid main at stock and install the 142 main would it possibly run right or would i have to up the pilot and mid mains as well?

I don't know since my stuff is for the old style carb.  Wow, they actually include a pilot in the new kits!  All the DJ kits I've ever used (4 and counting) never had one.  It's about time.  

In three of my kits their recommendations they gave (other than the pilot) were spot on.  The only time I had to deviate from their directions was on the GS500...I had to raise the clip one position to cure a slight flat spot at 50% throttle when I first installed it.  Haven't touched the needle or the jets since.  This is all old style carb, though.

EDIT...ADDED Please don't think I'm trying to lead you away from the Buddha stuff.  Sounds like his setup is the best GS setup around.  I'm just throwing all this out there since everyone says dynojet is crap, but most people haven't tried it.

Only the GS needed pilots swapped out ...

The New DJ kit including pilots is possibly to counter the buddha factor ...

The DJ kits pilot swap is a bit iffy, I know of someone who didn't like the 40's on the 89-00 bike.

If they're adding it in the new bikes ... well I guess its needed then.

DJ can be made to work just that I haven't done enough on it to say - do this for it to work ...

its all good man anything is a help right now. so far i have two choices 1. keep the dynojet kit and hope it runs good or 2. sell the kit and buy buddha's kit which from what i have been hearing will most likely get my bike running good

this may help any answers as well. My bike since the air filter upgrade starts fine and from the feel of it runs fine till about 7K rpms then it starts bogging down

I think it's gonna be a tad bit harder to tune with the single pod filters....  :dunno_black: :bstar:

I wasn't saying that the dynojet jetting was crap.  I recommend the buddha carb setup since it seems more people on this site have gone with the buddha setup and it has been more tested to be able to know what works with less tinkering.

I don't know anything about the dynojet kit. But assuming the dual pods have similar airflow to the lunchbox, I recently found that 20/65/142.5, no washers seems to be working perfectly. I just came back from a track weekend and it did well there too. I'd say return the DJ kit and get the jets from either Buddha or from carbparts.com.

Mains of your choice and I dont have 142.5 ... sorry, only 147.5 ... pilots, washers for the needle, bolts for the float bowl, you'd destroy 1/2 of them easy when  you get em out, and mids if you want em and pay for em.

well based on what i have done as far as the air filters what would you recommend as a good starting point for the mains and is it really necessary to have the mid mains? sorry i am such a pain but this is new to me and you know alot more than i do so i appreciate any of your help

i needed to replace the mids when i rejetted mine but i did the lunchbox and pipe.  Dunno if you would need it or not without the pipe.  You can always try without the mids and just the washers first and if it is still lean get the mids later.  That is what i ended up doing.

yeah thanks but i think i am just gonna hold out on putting the air filters on until i get exhaust and that way i just do it all at one time instead of doing it twice and spending more money figuring out what i need

In a way you can jet the stock one now, then just swap mains when you do it all ... but your call ...

Definately use buddhas kit its cheap, its tested and works he has a note book of all the jets and set ups that he has sent out. I used his and have no problems. fires up no choke, runs great. Thinkk I only paid $28 for it.... vs.... Dynojet $1,000,000,000 for BS
