I'm looking to get a new tank somewhere in the near future as mine has more dents than it knows what to do with. What year is it that they switched to the newer shape? I'm guessing 2001 from Buddha's last comment?

yes.  if you cut the little triangle off the front of the older seat, it will look alot better with the newer tank.

I have a 1990 gs500 and it has a tank from a 2002 on it right now. it looks a little funny but it fits in there just fine. I will take a picture of it when I head out so you can see what it looks like

a used tank was much harder to find than I expected. I ended up getting one for 100 bucks on ebay

so here is what my 1990 looks like with a 2002 tank. ignore my half finished paint job (its still a work in progress)
