How much should I ask for?

Hey guys,

I'm freaking out! I just won a BMW R1150R Rockster! Anyway, I'll be selling my GS500 but I'm not sure what to ask for it. I have a 1996 (blue book is just over $2000), but I've put it down once. It had been dropped on the right side before I bought it and I went down on the left side. Both engine cases are scratched, both sides of the tank are dented (the left side has paint missing), both pegs and brake/shifter are scraped, and the rear of the right mirror is scraped. On the plus side, I just had the carbs rebuilt this summer and Progressive springs have been installed in the front forks.

I'm thinking $800-$1200. Is that way out of the ballpark?

Thanks,

Well... I guess it's going to depend on the extent of the damage, you got any pics you can post? It might make it easier for the people in the know to give you a ballpark.

That said...

Where you located? I'm looking for a GS500.

Congrats on winning the BMW! What are the odds on that? It's one tight looking bike to be sure, when do you pick it up and are you gonna grace us with pics?

You WON a bike valued at over $10K and you want to SELL yoru gs? C'mon, pass the good kharma and donate it to a new rider somewhere, or to your local MSF, or to a charity.

Rockster is a sweet bike. My good buddy had one (traded it in for r1150gs). Sounds exceptional with a Remus exhaust. congratulations on winning it too!

Seriously though, let's get some info on her, hm? How many miles? Where's it at? Pics would be nice...

I'll get some photos up either today or in the morning. The bike has 14800 miles on it.

Yes, the Rockster is valued at $10,790, but my state has 9.25 percent sales tax. I'll need every penny I can get from my GS to afford to keep the BMW. But I did look into donating it to my MSF and they don't use donated bikes. They have an arrangement with local dealers to keep new bikes in their program (none of tham are more than a year old). Also, donating my GS may be all that keeps me from taking a real beating when it comes time to file taxes next year! Something to think about, for sure.

Oh yeah, I won it through Regal Cinemas. It was a contest associated with the movie "Paycheck." Ben Affleck rides it in the movie. The guy at Regal told me that there were over 60,000 valid entries! What luck!

I don't know anything about the Rockster.  Is that your top-pick bike?  Maybe you could keep the GS, sell the Rockster, and take your time picking out the bike you REALLY want.

You know you're gonna miss that GS!  :)

Let GStwin raffle it off to raise money.  or you hold a private raffle and give it away.  What do you need the money for?  You have a free brand new bike!  (ps.  if the bike is being delivered to you through a dealer they might let you swap it for another bike.  Many BMW dealers also sell Triumph and Ducati.... nuff said

You should REALLY consider replacing the tank with a new one before selling it -you'll recoup the $400.

Here's a link to some photos. I photographed everything that I could find that wasn't what a 1996 should look like. There are general scratches around the ignition and small things you'd expect on an older bike, but these photos are the noticeable things. Should I bother trying to fix anyhting? Is $1000 too much to expect?

I'd ask $1200 if you have time and $900 if you want sell quick.

Does the tachometer work OK?

I'm not sure if the tach cable is supposed to have that bend (as seen in the last picture on your photos page), but I don't think it's supposed to be separated from the housing like that....

The tach works great. I just had it out to replace the bulb and I must have negleted to tighten the thumb screw. The bend doesn't look strange to me because it was that way when I bought it (not a result of wreck or drop). Thanks for the attention, though.

There, the link is fixed.

Then does everyone else agree? $900-$1200 based on the cosmetic damage?

I was told delivery on the new bike may be "several weeks," so I guess I have time to be firm on the price right now.

Thanks for the input so far,
Scott

I'm in Knoxville, Tennessee and I might be open to discuss delivery. It just depends on the destination.
