I remember reading a post about someone attaching a Rubbermaid action packer to the back of their bike. I just can't remember if it was here or not. I tried searching, but I suck and can't find anything. Here's what I'm talking about.

There were pictures of the earlier GS (a GS550, IIRC) with large ammo cans on a rack as panniers (ie, the 20mm shell sort, not the rather small 50 caliber cans). Now that's redneck. And a lot sturdier - I expect you'll rip the plastic on that thing if you bolt it to a mount. If you want plastic that might hold together, look in the cooler section - the double layer with foam in between makes for something that's a little bit more like sturdy. You'll still want big washers on any bolts, or have to build a cage around it.

Hey Mary, I assume you're talking about the box.  They actually come in different sizes.  Without size reference you can't be sure of the box size in the pic.

Bucks - If you have soft saddle bags that are mounted even with the seat, you could strap the box onto the seat and it wouldn't extend any further then the bags.

most of those kinda bins are made from HDPE - high density polyethylene. It melts and softens before burning in our atmosphere, so you can actually form it with boiling water from a kettle...

why doe that matter? cause if you were brave you could form it to the tail end of the bike. it would be ghetto, but thats how i roll 

or you could just use large fender washers or a drilled flat peice of steel and bolt that puppy down. the lid looks sturdy.

yeah, if you wanted to bolt it down, you'd probably do best to cut a sheet of metal, or sturdy plastic to the shape of the bottom, then bolt through it all. That container looks more industrial, but I think finding an ok looking bag and sewing straps onto it to strap it to the back seat would be way more practical. I used to come up with all kinds of bags that would mount of my bike one way or another.

Actually, PorkChop the smallest one is 8 gallons making it still HUGE for my taste. That one actually looks like the 24g one if I had to guess.

Not looking to make this a permanent addition to my bike. Just wanted something that I could use for a weekend trip I'll be taking in a couple months.

Do you have a top rack or anything?  I would think that lacking something sturdy to attach it too might be a problem, but if you popped a top rack on there a few min with the bungie cords would have you set with that monster.

No top rack, I saw someone who had one bungie corded down to the passenger seat. Just wanted something on the cheap, might try a duffle bag or something.

Maybe this is what you had in mind?

Be dang careful. Cheap can get expensive - in particular, if your cobbled together (or bought, for that matter) luggage shifts, flops about and/or starts trailing straps, if either a strap or the luggage itself gets caught in the chain or rear wheel you will suddenly have a locked rear wheel. If you happen to be cornering at the time, or have someone following too close, it can get unpleasant. Cobble away, but keep that in mind, and stop a few times early in any trip to re-check for straps coming loose, etc.
