Over the winter I am rebuilding my 89'. The bike has been entirly ripped down. I am in the process of getting my tank and plastics ready for paint. I am wondering what the best  and most durrable way to go about fixxing a dent in a tank. At the store they have all kinds of stuff that says it is for fillling dents. Some are fiberglass resin, with or without firberglass mixed in. Red filler spot putty, witch comes in a tube. Among other things.

My question is what should I use to fill in a dent that is maybe a 1/4" deep from the bar ends hitting the tank?

I dented my tank when I was repainting. We used the red spot-putty. Sand down tank, then fill in the hole, making sure you go OVER the top. Once it's dried fully sand THAT down to the level of the tank. Once you're done lay down your spray-on-filler and paint like normal. With a bit of time and some attention to detail no one should ever know there was a dent there, unless they grind it back to the metal!

Good luck...

I used Flowable Putty.  It is polyester 2 part putty that worked great on my tank, and can be used on the plasic body parts.  With any of the two part puttys, experiment with how much hardener you use, for some of the small nicks, I used no hardener to give me more work time, and it still gets as hard.  I like the flowable putty because it has a sork time of about 3-6 min. and you can sand in about 20.

Good Luck
