RPMs climbing high when throttled

Hey everyone,

I recently fixed up my carbs due to overflowing fuel caused by bad float needles and o-rings. Now my bike starts up and idles high 2000-3000, however when I roll on the throttle the RPMs climb higher and higher until I kill the switch. Could this be an air leak in the intake or a problem with the choke not closing(my choke cable is without a spring at the moment)? Any and all suggestions are appreciated. Thanks so much!

Yea choke needs a spring ... but you may have a awol O ring. Or other air leak ... or be lean ...
Cool.

A new choke cable is on the way, in the meantime which O-rings should I check on? How do you check for air leaks? Do I adjust the mixture screws lower or higher to enrich the fuel?

Sounds like cruise control to me.

You might have messed with the idle adjust when you were working on the carbs. It's the bigger knob that sticks out of the bottom of the carbs. I'll leave any o-ring/choke questions to Buddha though.

Spring, cable is OK ... I dunno, spring isn't part of the cable ... but the choke has a internal closing spring. the external one is just for extra insurance.
The top has O rings, that is the first stop IMHO.

sticky throttle due to improper assembly perhaps?

seriously how important are those tiny o rings under the carb tops? I noticed that mine were gone. I have not ordered any new ones yet. Are they a major concern or just a minor annoyance?

The O-rings above the slides critically important.  You have vacuum-operated carbs.  The throttle slides can't operate properly without them and you will have awful throttle control.

As for FOCO-NOCO's problem, I'd make sure you have good throttle and choke cables first and go from there.

I'll check on the throttle cable to make sure its adjusted right. I also noticed one of the little rubber gaskets on the choke mechanism is aged and broken, its number 39 in this diagram - http://www.bikebandit.com/showschematic/m6056sch246609. Is this vital? It doesn't appear to be leaking fuel but air maybe? If so where would be the best place to buy a replacement? Also when doing carb work, how exactly do you get those white plastic pieces just below the pilots and mains to come out. I think there is an O-ring down there I need to replace?????

thanks!
