I've stopped at a couple of auto-parts stores, and not found smaller wheel weights. After a tire change last weekend, I need to balance things before the next ride.

Where can I find them ?

:)

When I saw the title, I thought you meant those weights people use to supposedly "keep the front end down during hard acceleration". :) I'm pretty sure the GS doesn't have that problem

Sorry, I don't know where to get balancing weights. Maybe a local shop/dealer will spare a few?

I bought the stick-on adhesive type weights off of ebay. 3-4 pounds for less than $20.

If you are wanting the clip-on style, you may have to order/purchase them from a MTC dealer.
Common sense in not very common.

why don't you take it to a shop and have it ballanced.  its going to be like 8 bucks

I've had a couple of bad experiences with motorcycle shops now. One time the rear caliper was hanging in the wind, another time the front axle nut was -kinda- on. I'm trying to teach myself how to do things the slow and proper way. :) As far as the $8 goes, you're absolutely right, it's cheap. Maybe I'm a glutton for punishment ? ;)

How might one balance a wheel themselves? I want to learn. I was a schooled bicycle mechanic, so i get the idea behind truing a wheel. is it the same type process, I guess adding weight instead of twisting spokes?

pretty much, ya. if you can true a spoked wheel, you can balance one. there are videos on no-mar's sight showing exactly how to change tires, balance wheels, and caveats. check em out:

you don't -have- to use their products, but i figured since they are nice enough to host tutorials, they deserve a plug. :)

Haha, where the hell did this guy come from?!

Anyway, I just ordered some when I ordered my tires. I don't remember where, but any place online that sells motorcycle tires will sell weights. I wanted to get the clipon type like the GS has, but the place I ordered from didn't have good enough pictures to make sure I got the right kind, so I bought stick on ones.

As far as balancing them compared to truing a wheel, you don't have to deal with wheels being out of true, but you know how when you're truing a wheel it always stops with the valve at the bottom of the rotation because the valve makes it the heaviest part of the wheel? That's the same thing that makes the whole bike shake when it's in the stand and you start spinning the wheel fast. The only difference is that instead of the valve it's because motorcycle wheels are heavy and not perfect. Make a cheap stand for it out of 2x4s, and spin the wheel a couple times, if it keeps stopping in the same position you put a weight on the top, and keep doing that until it doesn't always stop in the same spot anymore.

I've been curious if trying to balance my bicycle wheels would do anything or not, but I haven't bothered to try yet.

I pulled up to the back of a shop (believe it was a Firestone) and asked a mechanic if he would sell me 4 or 5 adhesive weights for a couple dollars and he just gave them to me.
